The Newcastle Yacht Club is an incorporated Not-For-Profit Organization. The objectives of the Newcastle Yacht Club are:
a) to establish, maintain, conduct and operate a club for use and convenience of members, their families and guests;
b) to promote excellence in the sport of boating; and
c) to promote such other sports and social activities as may be desirable in the interest of the members of the Club generally. The Newcastle Yacht Club was created in the summer of 1976 and incorporated as a Not-For-Profit Organization. In the fall of that year a meeting, to which all of the boaters at the Port Of Newcastle were invited, took place to discuss the creation of an active Yacht Club. From this initial meeting it was determined that there was enough interest in a Club to justify continuing. During the winter months of '76 & '77 there were several activities on the go, not the least of which, was the compilation of the Club's constitution. Copies of bylaws were acquired from other clubs and from those, a draft set of bylaws was compiled. A meeting was held at the Port of Newcastle in May of 1977 to agree on a date for a formal meeting, at which time a slate of officers would be voted in, dues would be set and a burgee selected. A contest was organized for the purpose of selecting the burgee. Several designs were submitted and it's unfortunate that none of them have survived. The following month, the first General meeting took place at the Newcastle Town Hall on June 11, 1977. At this meeting the Club's draft bylaws were read, and after a general discussion they were approved unanimously. An election for the first executive was completed:

Rear Commodore - Patrick Lavelle
Secretary - Vimmy McQueen
Treasurer - David Waddell

Dues were set at $25 and 16 memberships were issued for the first year. A Club burgee was selected at a General meeting held on July 16, 1977, which was an amalgamation of two of the designs submitted earlier. That first year saw the start of the Clubs traditional 'Year End Party', a lobster and shrimp dinner was served by the executive in the marina building (now called the Brig.) With the Annual General meeting in the fall of '77, the Club was up and running, we had rented a post office box for our correspondence and ended that first year with a bank balance of $186.66.
