Heritage New West supports the conservation of heritage homes, buildings and structures within the City of New Westminster.

The New West Heritage Preservation Society is one of the largest and most active local heritage groups in British Columbia. The society enthusiastically advocates and supports restoration, and actively promotes community appreciation of New Westminster's history. For over 40 years, the society has striven to identify and preserve sites, buildings, neighborhoods, houses and vegetation which are important to the community's heritage. In addition, the society is recognized as the voice of heritage by local media and often appears before the municipal government on heritage matters.

A New Westminster resident proposes a community-led approach to restoring one of the city’s historic homes: https://bit.ly/3T7mpQJ

In her letter, Ford outlines the challenges facing the long-vacant property, as well as the heritage value identified in a 2026 heritage assessment. She proposes exploring whether a group of community members could come together to purchase, stabilize and restore the house — not primarily as an investment, but as an opportunity to save an important piece of New Westminster’s heritage.

Ford’s letter invites others who may be interested in such an approach to come together and explore whether there is enough community interest to take the idea forward.

You have to be a little intrepid to take on a house like this—but also able to see past the current condition to the good bones, craftsmanship and potential underneath. Forty-four years and counting with this grand dame! Irving House has been part of every Heritage Homes Tour since the beginning, and it just wouldn't be the same without it. Thank you to the dedicated staff and volunteers who continue to bring its stories to life for visitors year after year.
