Saturday morning is nearly here - and that means Kuirau Market time. ☕🛍️
If you’re looking for an easy start to the weekend, head down to Kuirau Park tomorrow morning for a coffee, some kai and a good wander around the stalls.
You never quite know what you’ll find - fresh food, hot breakfasts, international flavours, produce, plants, clothing, crafts, gifts, taonga, books, toys and plenty of those little market finds you weren’t planning on buying. 😄

Six days, plenty of walking, incredible birdlife… and a very different kind of Kiwi summer. 🌿🐦

At last Wednesday’s Rotary Rotorua North meeting, Paul Wollaston shared a more in-depth look at his and Robyn’s trip to Rakiura Stewart Island.
They chose the quick 20-minute flight over the two-hour ferry across Foveaux Strait, then spent six days exploring the island on foot, taking in the scenery and enjoying some of the amazing birdlife Rakiura is known for.

A highlight was visiting Ulva Island, the pest-free sanctuary just offshore, while New Year’s Eve at the South Sea Hotel and a compulsory feed of Blue Cod and chips rounded things out nicely. 🐟

The only thing that didn’t quite live up to the word “summer”? Temperatures around 14°C - so sweatshirts and polypro were definitely part of the daily uniform. 😄

Rotorua’s Saturday is looking pretty good overall, with temperatures around 17 - 19°C. The day should start fine, with occasional rain or showers more likely later in the afternoon - so the morning is shaping up nicely for a wander around the market.

🌱 Strong communities grow when local people have opportunities to succeed.
October is Rotary’s Economic and Community Development Month - a time to recognise the role local enterprise, skills, jobs and community initiatives play in creating stronger, more resilient communities. 💼🤝
Here in Rotorua, that idea is easy to see at the Kuirau Park Saturday Market. 🛍️☀️
Every weekend, local stallholders bring their products, skills, ideas and hard work to the market. Visitors support them by simply turning up, having a browse, making a purchase and connecting with the people behind the stalls. 🙌
It’s a small example of something much bigger:
local people supporting local people. 💙
For Rotary Rotorua North, the market is also an important part of how we stay connected with our community and help generate resources that can be directed back into worthwhile local initiatives. 🌿
Together, we build stronger communities. 💪

There’ll also be plenty of whānau around Rotorua tomorrow with the Aotearoa NZ Māori Rugby League Tamariki Tournament happening at Rotorua International Stadium, so if you’re heading that way, the market could be a good first stop for kai and supplies. Sporty

Our apprentice has just received the 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗮 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱, kindly sponsored through 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗮 and 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗭𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗳 𝗗𝗮𝘆.

Ever wondered what life is really like 800km east of Christchurch? 🌊

Last Wednesday, **Paul Sandford** gave Rotary Rotorua North a great impromptu talk about his and Bonnie’s recent trip to the Chatham Islands.

With a population of around 650 people, three primary schools, no local high school, and an economy built largely around farming and fishing, life on the Chathams is very different from mainland New Zealand. High school students need to leave the islands for boarding school, while electricity is generated by diesel.

Paul also shared some of the quirks of island life, fertile land, very little frost, plenty of wind, and apparently not quite as much sunshine as you might hope. 😄

It was one of those talks that reminds you how much there is to discover in our own backyard.
