We had a wonderful walk about the trails at Morrell Sanctuary and spotted the Western Rattlesnake Plantain (Goodyera oblongifolia) just beginning to spike and the Western Spotted Coralroot (Corallorhiza maculata var. occidentalis) in bloom. Coralroot is a fascinating, parasitic native orchid widely distributed across Vancouver Island and like the rattlesnake plantain, coralroots rely on their complex underground fungal partnerships to live. We added our spotting of rattlesnake plantain to the board for others to look for while on the trail 🌱

I wanted to take a moment to share some photos of the plants that have bloomed over the last month. It's been quite a vibrant display, with some flowers already starting to fade while others are still thriving and showcasing their colors. Each plant has its own unique charm, and it's fascinating to see how they evolve throughout the season. I hope you enjoy these snapshots as much as I enjoyed capturing them!

This stunning Phragmipedium Ecuagenera Dream, cultivated by CVIOS member Gerry H., is a remarkable example of its kind. Its growing conditions closely resemble those of the Phrag. sedenii, making it a delightful addition to any collection. Congratulations to Gerry for this achievement, and thank you for sharing this beauty with us!
