Housing costs go beyond rent or mortgage payments. For many Canadians, keeping a roof over their heads means making difficult choices about other parts of life, from groceries and savings to spending time with family and friends.

Habitat for Humanity Canada’s “Home at What Cost?” research highlights the sacrifices people are making just to afford housing.

And it raises an important question: What does housing really cost when it means giving up so much else?

Everyone deserves a safe, stable and affordable place to call home without having to sacrifice their well being to make it happen.

At Habitat for Humanity Mid-Vancouver Island, we believe affordable homeownership can help create a stronger foundation for families and their futures. 💙

Recently, a longtime Habitat family in Nanaimo reached out to us, giving us a moment to pause and reflect on the little things that carry us through life’s harder seasons: the glimmers of hope, joy and love that remind us what matters most!

After 17 years of raising their children in their Habitat home, this family shared how much that stability has meant to them and how proud they are to look toward the future knowing their home can continue to make a difference for generations to come:

“I am so proud that one day, I’ll be able to give that home to my daughters so they can achieve the same stability I did”

This is what affordable homeownership is all about. It’s more than having a place to live. it’s about building stability, creating memories and giving the next generation a stronger foundation for their future. 💙

Affordable homeownership can create greater stability, improved financial security, better employment outcomes and more opportunities for families to thrive.
And that impact starts with a community coming together to make homeownership possible.

Volunteers, donors, corporate partners, ReStore customers and community supporters all play a role in creating that ripple effect.

One home can create change that reaches much further than the front door. 💙

Today is World Habitat Day, a day to reflect on the state of housing around the world and the importance of ensuring everyone has a safe, secure and affordable place to call home!

This year’s theme, “Adequate Housing for All,” is a reminder that housing is more than a roof over our heads. It is a foundation for dignity, safety, stability and opportunity.

The global housing crisis affects billions of people, and while the challenges look different from community to community, the need for adequate housing is something we all share.

Here at Habitat for Humanity Mid-Vancouver Island, we believe in creating pathways to affordable homeownership for local families and we know that meaningful change happens when communities come together.

Every volunteer hour. Every donation. Every partnership. Every person who supports our work helps build toward a future where more families have a safe and affordable place to call home.

Today, we recognize the need. We celebrate the progress. And we keep building toward adequate housing for all.💙

Homeownership shouldn’t feel like a luxury. But for many Canadians, that’s the reality, and it’s why Habitat’s work matters now more than ever.

Here on Mid-Vancouver Island, we’re working to create affordable pathways to homeownership for local families, and we can’t do it alone.

It takes volunteers. Donors. Community partners. Businesses. And people who believe that safe, affordable homeownership should be possible for more families. 💙
