A major milestone for the Credit Valley Trail is now complete. 🎉

Yesterday, we celebrated the official opening of a new 40-metre pedestrian bridge at Upper Credit Conservation Area in Caledon.

This important river crossing improves trail connectivity to Orangeville, offers beautiful views of the surrounding wetland, forest and river valley, and brings us one step closer to a continuous 100-kilometre trail through the Credit River Valley.

The bridge is one of the first major infrastructure achievements for the Credit Valley Trail. Since 2020, the Credit Valley Conservation Foundation has been helping advance the trail through a 10-year campaign to raise $10 million to fully connect the route. Thanks to generous support from donors and partners, more than 65 per cent of that goal has already been achieved.

Today, Credit Valley Conservation celebrated the official opening of a new 40-metre pedestrian bridge on the Tranmer property, part of Upper Credit Conservation Area. This marks a significant milestone for the Credit Valley Trail.

This key river crossing improves connectivity and brings us closer to a continuous 100-kilometre trail through the Credit River Valley. As part of the trail’s optimum route, the bridge helps to bring the vision of the trail network closer to reality linking Island Lake Conservation Area in the Town of Orangeville with communities to the south of the Town of Caledon.

This project was made possible through strong partnerships and funding from the Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada and Ontario Government Government through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program’s (ICIP) Community, Culture and Recreation Stream. The total grant contribution to the Conservation Area Trail Infrastructure project was $ $1.7M from the Government of Canada and over $1.4M from the Government of Ontario. We also extend our sincere appreciation to Dufferin County for its support in securing the trail easement, facilitating approvals and assisting with construction logistics.

Sylvia Jones, MPP, Lisa Post, Mayor of Orangeville, Michael Palleschi, CVC Chair and Regional Councillor Wards 2 & 6, City of Brampton, Christina Early, CVC board member and Regional Councillor Wards 1, 2, 3, Town of Caledon, Elder Carolyn King, Indigenous partners, community leaders, supporters and trail champions who joined us to mark this important achievement.

Isn't the colouring on this common shiner beautiful? 🤩🐟 This small native fish found throughout the Credit River Watershed play a key role in healthy aquatic ecosystems.

They help keep aquatic food webs in balance as a valuable food source for larger species like bass, pike and trout. They also feed on aquatic insects and other small organisms, making them an essential part of life below the surface. A healthy watershed depends on every species, big and small.

For more than a decade, UPS has been a committed partner of Credit Valley Conservation and Credit Valley Conservation Foundation, investing nearly $500,000 to help advance conservation and strengthen communities across the Credit River Watershed.

We're helping to build the next generation of women environmental leaders! 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏾‍♀️🙋‍♀️ 🙋🏽‍♀️

What does it take to build a resilient future for our watershed?
It takes science. It takes stewardship. It takes innovation. It takes community.

And it takes women at the table leading, giving, advocating and shaping the decisions that define our environmental future.

During CVC's Girls in Week, part of our Conservation Youth Corps program, we are are creating opportunities for girls to meet women working across the conservation and the environmental sectors. Participants have the opportunity to hear stories, ask questions and learn about the many ways a career in conservation can make a difference.

Why do we do this? Because representation matters.

When young women can see themselves in scientists, environmental leaders, communicators, stewards, philanthropists and decision-makers, they can begin to imagine themselves in those roles too.

This belief extends beyond this program. It is also the driving force behind Women for the Watershed, part of the Credit Valley Conservation Foundation’s Giving Circle campaign, which brings women together around the shared belief that they have an important role to play in protecting the places, communities and natural systems we all depend on.

Women for the Watershed is about more than philanthropy. It is about connection, influence, mentorship, advocacy and collective action, creating a community where women can learn from one another, invest in conservation and help shape a more resilient watershed for generations to come.

Today’s girls are tomorrow’s environmental leaders.

Our responsibility is not simply to tell them that there is a place for them in conservation. It is to create space, ensure they can see themselves in it and empower them to lead the way forward.
