We’re excited to announce the launch of the new Halton Rural Water Quality Program (HRWQP)! 🎉
Complete with grants and technical support, this new program is perfect for farmers and rural landowners in the Black Creek and Silver Creek sub-watersheds in Halton Region looking to adopt best management practices (BMPs) for their land and the environment.

Examples of BMPs covered by the HRWQP include:
• Adding cover crops to boost soil health
• Planting windbreaks and riparian buffers to prevent erosion
• Installing livestock exclusion fencing to improve water quality

Following this devastation, the Province of Ontario and conservation authorities, including CVC, took action to help communities prepare for and reduce flood risks in the future. This is when our flood forecasting and warning system was initiated in 1956 as one of the ways to help protect people and property from flooding. DYK? It’s been 72 years since Hurricane Hazel devastated the Toronto region. 🌊 In just 48 hours, 285 mm of rain fell, causing catastrophic flooding and the loss of lives, homes and communities. Hurricane Hazel became a catalyst for stronger planning and regulatory measures to reduce flood risk and help prevent future tragedies.

Today, Conservation Authorities use comprehensive watershed data, floodplain mapping and other science-based tools to help inform safe development, reduce risk and protect people and property from flooding.

Follow along this fall as we share more about how your local Conservation Authority helps communities plan ahead, supports projects and reduces the risk of natural hazards across Ontario.

Along Silver Creek at a railway crossing owned by the Canadian National Railway Company is a perched culvert, the only fish passage barrier to the endangered Redside Dace in Silver Creek.

CVC's Aquatic and Wetland Restoration team installed a floating fish ramp to mitigate this barrier and reconnect this critical Redside Dace habitat. We would like to thank the Cabela's Outdoor Fund for making this fish passage project possible!

TRAIL STATUS: Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area - Additional line painting work is planned for Monday, October 19, through to Wednesday, October 21. All trails will remain open while this work is being completed. Please be aware of temporary lane closures and construction vehicles along the trails.

Protecting wetlands from phragmites! 🌿

Thanks to support from the Invasive Phragmites Control Fund, our Invasive Species Management team is hard at work controlling phragmites, a type of invasive reed, across seven of our conservation areas. This work helps protect and restore the health of wetland habitats across the Credit River Watershed.

🍂🌽 This Thanksgiving, we’re giving thanks for the incredible plants, animals and natural spaces that make the Credit River Watershed thrive.

From squirrels gathering acorns to beavers fortifying lodges and birds and insects filling up for migration, wildlife is hard at work harvesting nature’s bounty this season too.

As we gather with family and friends, it’s also a time to appreciate the landscapes that provide healthy ecosystems and opportunities to connect with nature year-round.
