ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: KIANNA ROY 🛠️

At just 17, Kianna Roy made a decision most people wouldn't expect: she left the traditional classroom to chase hands-on experience instead. Trades run in the family, her dad's been roofing for 20+ years, her brother's a steamfitter apprentice – so Kianna already knew where her curiosity lived. 👷

She found her next step with our Sudbury Skilled Trades Training Program, earning 12 credits toward her OSSD through a co-op placement and picking up her G1 licence along the way. ✅

"As I started thinking about my own future, I wanted an opportunity to gain hands-on experience and learn more about different career paths. That's what led me to Community Builders," Kianna shared.

Today, Kianna is building a career in the trades – proof of what's possible when young people get a real path forward. 💪🌟

Central North Correctional Centre is building new pathways to employment for inmates through its community partnership with Community Builders, while bridging the gap for Ontario’s growing need for skilled trade workers.

Selected inmates from the carpentry program work with Community Builders to gain pre-employment experience combined with classroom instruction and hands-on projects. They are also evaluated on reliability, skills development, job readiness, and where opportunities exist, are connected to potential employers.

Through the program, inmates develop practical workplace skills, industry exposure and create the foundation for successful rehabilitation and reintegration into communities.
