Ontario Judging and Exhibiting Standards 2019
A Design A combination of fresh and/or dried plant material, with or without other objects
arranged to create an artistic unit. A design may include containers(s), base(s)
and/or accessories. The designer uses the elements of design: space, line, form,
colour, texture and pattern in the accepted principles of design: balance, rhythm,
proportion, scale, contrast and dominance to interpret the theme and/or class
and create a design or harmony and distinction. (OJES, p. 137)
Exhibition Table Type 1: The majority of the components are usually placed in a non-functional
manner consistent with the principles of design. Accessories are permitted but
should not be more dominant than the dining components used. A floral design is
required and should enhance the overall setting and be in pleasing proportion to
space allotted. NO CUT FRUIT OR CUTLERY IS ALLOWED (OJES, p. 139)
Parallel Design A design in which three or more groupings are placed in a parallel manner with
open spaces between the groupings. The parallel direction may be vertical,
horizontal or diagonal. The design is in one container or in containers combined
so as to appear as one unit. There are two types of Parallel Design: Vegetative
Parallel and Decorative Parallel. Please see OJES 2019, p. 147 for more details.4
Small Design A design from 14cm to 5-1/2” to 10” (25.4cm) and which must not exceed 10”
(25.4cm) in height, width and depth, including any container, base, and/or
accessories. (OJES, p. 150) In general, it is best to make design slightly smaller
than the maximum.
Visible Use of Water A design that must include water that is clearly visible. Any design in which water
is an important component. May be Water Viewing, Underwater, etc. (OJES, p.
156).
Copies of the Ontario Judging and Exhibiting Standards (OJES) are available for purchase from your
