Did you know that Local 258 has our own Health & Welfare Trust to provide benefits for our members?

For many years, Local 258 was part of the Joint Electrical Industry Welfare Plan. Participation was optional for signatory employers; those who chose not to participate were supposed to provide employees with an equivalent plan. Enforcing employers to provide equivalent benefits proved to be challenging; many had substandard benefits.

In 2014, Local 258 pulled out of the Joint Electrical Industry Welfare Plan and established our own Health and Welfare Trust. We subsequently bargained mandatory participation amongst the signatory employers. This resulted in a standardization of benefits in the industry; each employer now has the exact same benefits.

The trust is administered by a third party, and a board of trustees oversees the trust. Half of the trustees are appointed by the union, and the other half are appointed by the employers. Collectively the trustees determine the benefit levels and the funding amounts. The Business Manager is the chair of the trust.
