A worthy reminder to keep yard waste out of our natural areas. Many exotic and invasive plants in the Holland Creek corridor have been introduced through irresponsible dumping of yard waste.

Just because it’s green doesn't mean it belongs!

Dumping garden clippings, pulled plants or old hanging baskets in forests, ditches, and natural areas can introduce invasive species to new places.

Periwinkle and English ivy are common garden plants that can escape into nearby forests when discarded. Once established, they can spread across the forest floor, crowd out native plants and disrupt natural ecosystems.

• Dispose of garden waste through approved green waste services
• Never dump plants or soil in natural areas
• Check local disposal guidelines for invasive plants, as some require special handling.

Our Friends of Holland Creek Garry oak woodland restoration project is coming to fruition!

This project is the culmination of months of cross-agency collaboration, planning, and community effort, built on years of dedicated broom busting.

With support from the Ladysmith Parks, Recreation & Culture, soil has been delivered and volunteers have begun planting a diverse mix of native species associated with Garry oak woodlands and meadow. Together, these plants will help establish a native plant community reminiscent of the dry forest ecosystems found along the northeastern edge of the Holland Creek riparian corridor.

While we are excited to see this project enacted, there's still work to do. We'd love your help as we complete planting and site restoration on November 14 and 18.

SUNNY GLADES PLANTING DAY NOV 18TH

Calling all gardeners and tree planters big and small to bring your favorite digging tools, it is time to plant our Garry oak ecosystem restoration site. As a small yet mighty volunteer led organization with big plans, we need community help!

Registration is preferred. Check our events webpage friendsofhollandcreek.ca or email [email protected].

Where: Sunny Glades site is on 533 Methuen Street and we will meet at the hut on Methuen and 6th for orientation and coffee.
When: November 18th, 10 am to 1 pm
What to expect: A range of soil preparation and planting with guidance from our restoration practitioners.
Planting small potted shrubs and plugs, spreading mulch and soil, invasive blackberry removal, watering.
What to bring: footwear with ankle support, long sleeves and pants, dress for the weather. Bring your favourite digging tools for rocky soil, gloves, rakes.

Tomorrow is our regular 2nd Saturday of the month workbee. Come on down to Sunny Glades and help us get ready for the big planting event. Or just come and chat to us about what we are doing.

When: 10am Saturday 10th October
What to bring: Gloves, your favourite weeding tools, rakes and digging tools. Wheelbarrow would be handy. We have a fair selection of tools.
