Did you know … Monarch Butterflies are poisonous?

According to the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary website, Monarchs eat poisonous milkweed during their larval stage, which is stored in the body.

This poison, known as cardiac glycosides, causes predators to vomit, although it rarely causes death.

The brightly hued wings of the Monarch Butterfly acts as a “warning sign” to deter hungry predators.

It’s that time of year again! The occasion that is a delight to nature lovers, landscapers and property owners throughout the Kingston area.

The Friends of Lemoine Point will host their annual Fall Tree Sale on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Native Plant Nursery on the grounds of Lemoine Point Conservation Area.

As in past years, the sale features a variety of trees, shrubs and perennial wildflowers – all native species to the area. Available species and pricing to come.

Looking for a deeply meaningful and deeply immersive way to explore the unique beauty of the internationally recognized Frontenac Arch Biosphere Region (FAB)?

Join Frontenac Arch Biosphere, Cataraqui Conservation and partners for the 2026 Trails Fest which features a series of free guided hikes within the UNESCO-designated Frontenac Arch Biosphere Region.

Hikes will take place on the following dates:
Friday, Sept. 11
• Wintergreen Studios at 2 p.m.
• Gould Lake Conservation Area at 5:30 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 12
• Mac Johnson Wildlife Area at 10 a.m.
• Upper St. Lawrence Kahnekaronnio (River) at 1 p.m.
• Jones Falls & Rideau Canal at 4 p.m.

Did you know … the Central Mudminnow is able to tolerate extremes in water temperature and low oxygen levels?

They have the ability to breath air and thus can survive for short periods of time when there is no oxygen in the water.

This is because mudminnows are uniquely designed to use oxygen in the water in the presence of relatively high concentrations of CO2 (carbon dioxide). When the oxygen is mostly used up, they can switch to using the oxygen from their swim bladder - a valuable supplementary organ for respiration.

Take a look for these quick, elusive fish when you’re near the shorelines or at one of the many wetlands that comprise parts of Cataraqui Conservation’s properties and conservation areas.

Cataraqui Conservation Foundation Hike Challenge
The Cataraqui Conservation Foundation announced that after the enthusiastic response it received for the 60th Anniversary Challenge, the fundraising organization will be once again presenting a Hike Challenge for 2026.

From Sept. 1 to Oct. 31, 2026, the Hike Challenge can be completed at four Cataraqui Conservation owned properties.

1. Lemoine Point Conservation Area
2. Little Cataraqui Creek Conservation Area
3. Section of the Cataraqui Trail
4. Marble Rock Conservation Area

Hike the highlighted trail at each conservation area, or a minimum three out of four, and look for the special coloured Cataraqui Conservation Foundation logo signs. Take a photo (selfie) with each of the signs to complete the challenge and upload your photos to the Hike Challenge photo page.

Once fall rolls around, Cataraqui Conservation’s Forest Therapy program will also be back for the fall and winter seasons.

It is a demonstrable fact that it is beneficial to spend time bathing in the atmosphere of the forest. More than four decades of research, has proven countless health benefits such as boosted immune system, reduced blood pressure, reduced stress, improved mood, increased ability to focus, even in children with ADHD, accelerated recovery from surgery or illness, increased energy level and improved sleep.
