The Portal

The Portal The Portal serves youth who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. We provide connection. Referrals: www.portalyouth.ca

At the Portal, our hope and focus is that each young person will find a place for connection, access services, support, and hope for the future. We serve as a β€œdoor” which young people can ask questions and begin changes towards greater resiliency.

People get involved for all kinds of reasons.

Some want to give back to their community.

Some want to support work they believe in.

Some are looking for a meaningful way to use their skills, experience, and perspective.

Whatever the reason, serving on a Board can be an opportunity to contribute to something bigger than yourself and help support important work happening close to home.

If you've been thinking about getting more involved in your community, this might be the opportunity you've been looking for.

πŸ’™ June is Men's Health Month.

We've been chatting with male-identifying staff and youth about the things that help support their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

One person shared:
πŸ’¬ "For me, it's the connections I have. Having the right supports and people around me helps when times get rough."

It's a good reminder that we aren't meant to navigate everything on our own.

Support can come from friends, family, coworkers, mentors, community, or trusted professionals. Sometimes simply knowing someone is in your corner can make all the difference.

❌ MYTH: You need to be in crisis before reaching out.
βœ… FACT: Support can start with a conversation.

Not every situation has to become an emergency before someone asks for help.

Sometimes the best time to reach out is before things feel overwhelming.

🌈 Pride Month is a celebration, but it's also a reminder that everyone deserves to feel safe, welcome, respected, and accepted for who they are.

At The Portal, we believe young people should be able to show up as themselves without fear of judgment.

Whether you're figuring things out, finding your community, or simply looking for a place where you can be yourself, you belong.

πŸ’™ You matter.
πŸ’™ You are welcome here.
πŸ’™ You deserve support.

πŸ• Last week's Chat Over Pizza brought together youth and staff for some honest conversations about what helps make the Rec Space feel safe, welcoming, and comfortable for everyone.

We talked about personal space, respect, assumptions, inclusion, and what it means to share a space with people who may have different experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives.

One participant shared:
πŸ’¬ "Respect is relative. It's about seeing the person as your equal."

There were a lot of thoughtful conversations and ideas shared throughout the afternoon, and we're grateful to everyone who took the time to be part of it.

The conversation was just the beginning.

We're now taking everything we heard and using it to help shape ongoing work around the Rec Space, with the goal of making it a place where people feel welcome, respected, and comfortable being themselves.

Thank you to everyone who shared their voice. πŸ’™

What does serving on The Portal's Board actually look like?

Board members help provide strategic direction, oversight, and support to help guide the organization's future. It's a governance role, not a day-to-day operational role, and Directors contribute an average of just 2-4 hours per month.

For many people, serving on a Board is an opportunity to use their skills, learn something new, connect with their community, and contribute to meaningful work.
