Today we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost 25 years ago.

In that remembrance, I think of Mark Bingham. He was the last person to board United Flight 93. He almost missed the plane. And at 9:23am when hijacker’s took over the cockpit, Mark and three of his fellow passengers led the fight to take it back. Their heroism saved lives.

Mark came out to his family an friends at 21 after graduating college. He played rugby for the San Francisco Fog RFC — the LGBTQ+ inclusive rugby union team. He was remembered by his parter of six years, Paul Holm, who said “If he knew that lives were at stake, I’m convinced with every bone in my body that he would have jumped into action, he was physically fit and strong, and guns and weapons didn’t bother him.” Mark was honoured at a ceremony in San Francisco victims of the attacks, where Paul was presented with a folded American flag.

Mark was 31 years old when United 93 crashed in that Pennsylvania field.
