FAQ Friday - Are there any fees for donors?

No. Donors do not pay any fees for donating their embryos.

It is important to note that donors must remain up to date with their clinic storage fees as Beginnings is legally not able to assist with this cost.

At Beginnings, we’re often asked why we don’t use the term "embryo adoption." The reason lies in the distinct nature of the process.

In Canada, adoption and embryo donation are governed by different legal frameworks. Adoption involves the legal transfer of parental rights, with the adoptive parents assuming full legal responsibility for the child.

In contrast, embryo donation is governed by the Assisted Human Reproductive Act (AHRA) and Health Canada, where the ownership of the donated embryo is transferred to the recipient.

We also recognize that many individuals begin their search using the term "Embryo Adoption." That’s why you may occasionally see in our posts. We use this hashtag to connect with those seeking information so they can learn more about Embryo Donation and understand the important distinctions between the two.

We believe in using clear, respectful language that accurately represents the emotional and legal complexities of building families through embryo donation.

Our Little Secret: A Night at the Theatre in Support of Donor Conception Canada

Join Donor Conception Canada (DCC) for an evening of theatre and community connection at OUR LITTLE SECRET, playing at Mirvish this November.

Winner of five Broadway World Regional Awards, including Best New Musical and Best Performance in a Musical, OUR LITTLE SECRET is the hilarious, moving, and completely true story of Toronto performer Noam Tomaschoff's discovery that he isn't an only child — he actually has more than 35 siblings around the world. Blending comedy, drama, and addictive music, OUR LITTLE SECRET will leave you laughing, crying, and seeing your own family in a whole new light. Our Little Secret and DCC (Canada's non-profit dedicated to supporting donor-conceived people and their families), has set aside a block of 100 seats for our community on Nov 7 at 7:30pm. Purchase your discounted show tickets, and consider adding a donation to DCC at checkout to support our programs and services. And stay after the show for an exclusive, one-night-only talk-back moderated by DCC's co-Chair, Dara Roth Edney (reproductive psychotherapist and clinical director at Informed Fertility), featuring the show's writer and star, Noam Tomaschoff, and his parents. This is a rare chance to hear directly from Noam and his family about the true story behind the show — and to connect with others in the donor conception community. We hope you'll join us for a night of laughter, meaningful dialogue, and connection.

Elaine already has her ticket and hopes to see you there!

A day full of mixed emotions. It’s okay to feel all of it. Because every emotion honours the journey.

Today we remember the babies we hold in our arms and the ones we carry in our hearts.

To everyone experiencing this complex mix today, you are seen and your story matters.

FAQ Friday - What are my choices regarding my remaining embryos?

When it comes to the decision regarding remaining embryos after an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle, there are several options and factors to consider. Couples and individuals are often faced with tough decisions about what to do with unused embryos, as they may have ethical, emotional, or practical implications. Here are the main choices available:

1. Freeze the Embryos for Future Use
2. Donate to Another Couple or Individual
3. Donate to Science or Research
4. Dispose of the Embryos

Ultimately, the decision regarding remaining embryos is deeply personal. Couples or individuals who are considering embryo donation should take the time to have open and honest conversations with medical professionals, counsellors and one another to ensure they are making the best decision for themselves and others involved.
