On August 31st, Jenna and Mike from our HNB Van team lead a memorial walk in Simcoe as part of International Overdose Awareness Day. A candlelight vigil was held with members of the community, to remember, honour, and support those impacted by substance use and overdose.

On August 31st, Chris and Marijo from our HNB Van team attended the Six Nations International Overdose Awareness Day event held at the Community Hall. People gathered to hear powerful stories by lived experience speakers, learned about resources across our communities, and listened to live music by the Healers. Thank you to Nations Department of Well Being for bringing us all together to remember, honour, and support those impacted by substance use and overdose.

August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day. We observe this day annually to honour those we’ve lost due to overdose and the toxic drug supply and reflect on what we can do as communities across Ontario, Canada, and the world to end overdose and drug policy-related harms.

In Ontario, we’ve witnessed the closure of the majority of our Supervised Consumption Sites (SCS), the consequential harm and deaths caused by these closures and the restrictions to harm reduction services despite harms being well-evidenced. WHAI honours community members who use substances, allies, service providers, friends and family who continue to fight for change in spite of the continued trauma and loss. For International Overdose Awareness Day, we’ve highlighted some resources and organizations to support your local capacity building to build our collective response to ending overdose and the toxic drug supply.

International Overdose Awareness Day 2026.

The Overdose Awareness Day flag is being flown at Governor's Square in Simcoe to recognize those who have lost their lives to a toxic drug poisoning.

Norfolk County will observe International Overdose Awareness Day by flying the International Overdose Awareness Day flag. The flag will be flown from Monday August 24th, 2026, until Tuesday, September 1st, 2026.

International Overdose Awareness Day aims to create a better understanding of overdose, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths, and foster changes that reduce the harms associated with drug use.
