On April 21, Positive Health Network, alongside Community Alliance for Accessible Treatment (CAAT), brought together a powerful day of learning, reflection, and action—centering the lived experiences of African, Caribbean, and Black newcomers living with HIV.
We heard from individuals who came to Canada seeking freedom from stigma, only to encounter new barriers along the way. And yet—what stood out most was not the hardship, but the strength. Their resilience. Their courage. Their unwavering commitment to building full, vibrant lives and lifting others as they rise.
Today, these community members are not only thriving—they are shaping Ontario for the better. They are leaders, advocates, and changemakers, helping to build more compassionate, inclusive systems for those who will follow.
People living with HIV continue to show us what it means to persevere with purpose, to create with vision, and to lead with heart.
Join us in building a province where every newcomer living with HIV can access care without fear, live without stigma, and thrive—fully and unapologetically.

February 7 is African, Caribbean & Black Canadian HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. It is a time to raise awareness, encourage open conversations about HIV, and support access to testing, prevention, and care while honoring the strength, resilience, and leadership of Black communities.
Why it matters:
Black people in Canada represent a small percentage of the population, but we are overrepresented among new HIV diagnoses, particularly among African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) communities
We face systemic barriers to care because of racism in the health, legal, political, and other social systems
HIV-related stigma is real and harmful, and in our case compounded by racism
To overcome these challenges, we advocate for culturally relevant prevention and education to better reach our communities and the providers who serve us
Be part of the solution! Get tested! Support your friends, family, patients and clients in getting tested and learning more about how we can improve access to care and information about HIV for African Caribbean and Black communities in Canada.
