October 1 marks Treaty Day and the beginning of Mi’kmaw History Month in Nova Scotia.

This year marks 300 years since Mi’kmaq leaders and community members met with the British Crown in what is now Annapolis Royal to establish the first Peace and Friendship Treaty. The Treaty of 1752 further strengthened this relationship, designating October 1 as a day to gather, exchange gifts, and renew the alliance. These treaties created a framework for peace without the surrender of Indigenous lands, while explicitly protecting Mi’kmaw rights to hunt, fish, gather, and trade.

Guided by this year’s theme, Nepisulti’k (We Are Healing), we invite you to join us throughout October as we deepen our understanding of treaty responsibilities and engage meaningfully with Mi’kmaw history, culture, and lived experiences. Follow Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre and Every One Every Day Kjipuktuk/Halifax to learn more about events and initiatives happening in our community!

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we recognize and reflect upon the brutal legacy of the residential school system in Canada and understand this tragic history for what it truly is—intentional and systemic cultural genocide. We remember and honour the children who never returned home, as well as survivors, their families, and their communities.

At Phoenix, we are on a journey to learn and unlearn, and we do that work with humility. On September 30, our community programs and offices will be closed in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We invite you to walk with us, as we engage in opportunities for listening, critical reflection, and taking action towards reconciliation, every day of the year.

Sending a HUGE thank you to AXIS Capital for their A+ donation of 30 backpacks to our Back to School Drive! 🎒✨

Each brand-new backpack came with a water bottle and was filled with school supplies to help students start the year feeling prepared and confident. We’re incredibly grateful not only for this thoughtful donation, but also for the time, care, and effort your team put into selecting items tailored to students of all ages, from elementary through high school.

Thank you for making a real difference for local youth and families! 🧡💜
