Impact isn't always immediate, but it's always real.

At Ankekuluk, we see learning unfold through relationships, shared experiences, and consistent encouragement. Some moments lead to recognized course credits and educational pathways. Others build equally important foundations of confidence, cultural knowledge, leadership, and resilience.

Every form of learning has value because every young person learns differently.

We also know that safety matters. When youth feel physically, emotionally, culturally, and psychologically safe, they're better able to make sense of their experiences, develop healthy ways of coping, and build trust in themselves and others.

This is what intentional design looks like; creating environments where learning and healing can happen at the same time.

Every young person deserves a place to belong.

Ankekuluk creates opportunities for Inuit youth to connect with culture, learn from Elders, build confidence, and experience the healing power of being on the land.

Your donation helps support youth programming, cultural activities, transportation, mentorship, and the day-to-day work that makes these experiences possible.

Whether it's $25 or $250, every contribution helps us create safe, supportive spaces where Inuit youth can thrive.

Meet Anke Krug, Ankekuluk's founder and Director

Anke founded Ankekuluk after more than two decades working as a registered nurse in Inuit communities. During that time, she witnessed the challenges that many Inuit youth face when support arrives too late. She also saw what becomes possible when young people are surrounded by kindness, consistency, culture, and trusted adults who stay connected.

Her work in Kimmirut helped shape the foundation for Ankekuluk. Following a community-led youth needs assessment, Anke helped lead a Jordan’s Principle initiative that secured more than $1.5 million for essential supports identified directly by youth and families, including food, winter gear, beds, and bedding. In 2024, Anke received the Canadian Award of Excellence in Nursing.

The name Ankekuluk was given to Anke by Elder Annie Ikkidluak, and it continues to guide the spirit of this work: care rooted in relationship.

This is what “in action” looks like: turning lived community experience into a long-term commitment to Inuit youth and their futures.

Enoosie brings both professional and lived experience to her role with Ankekuluk. A lifelong resident of Kimmirut, Nunavut, and a local kindergarten teacher, she works closely with children, youth, and families every day.

At Ankekuluk, she helps ensure youth voices and experiences are part of the work by offering insight into what young people need, feel, and aspire to.

Meet Joe Patterson, Ankekuluk's Program Director

Joe brings more than 30 years of experience working with Indigenous youth, with a lifelong focus on mental health, wellness, and relationship-based support. Throughout his career, he's worked in youth services, recreation, residential assessment, cultural programming, and adventure-based therapeutic approaches, including equine-assisted psychotherapy.

He spent 20 years with Saskatchewan Social Services, including a decade at Red Willow Centre, where he conducted holistic assessments and worked closely with Indigenous Elders and cultural teachings.

Joe also led the 2023 youth needs assessment in Kimmirut through Edge Wellness Solutions, gathering input from Elders, youth, families, and community members. The findings helped secure funding for essential community supports, including youth programming, school nutrition initiatives, winter clothing, and beds and bedding for local youth.

As Ankekuluk's Program Director, Joe applies this extensive experience to designing and delivering experiential, land-based programming that supports youth through connection, cultural grounding, and consistent mentorship. His approach is hands-on, relational, and guided by years of work in cultural settings and adventure-based therapies.

This is what “in action” looks like: by showing up, building trust, and walking alongside youth on the land.

Our language lives in the land.

When Inuit youth are out on the land, learning from Elders and observing, participating and being present, language becomes something they feel, not just something they memorize.

Ankekuluk is rooted in this way of learning. It’s not about one-time lessons, it’s about steady experiences that build confidence, identity, and connection over time.

Each moment on the land is a chance to hear, speak, and carry that knowledge forward through hunting, gathering, storytelling, and shared daily life.

This is how Ankekuluk thrives:
• Through practice, not pressure
• Through relationships, not isolation
• Through living connection to culture and place

When youth return home, they don’t just take words with them; they carry pride, strength, and a deeper sense of who they are.

That’s the future Ankekuluk is helping build.

Support does not end at the completion of Ankekuluk’s on the land program. Professional and peer support will be available to participants on an ongoing basis. Regular support groups will be created, with staff from Ankekuluk making connections in the home communities of our participants to ensure the current infrastructure is available for continuing support.

We’re strongest when we are connected to our families, our Elders, our youth, and the land itself.

Ankekuluk is about belonging. It reminds us that no one walks alone, and we move forward together, guided by those before us and those yet to come.

Today, take a moment to reach out, check in, and view the possibilities at Ankekuluk for Inuit youth at www.ankekuluk.ca

There are enormous, ongoing and extreme gaps experienced by many Indigenous populations, but none so much as Inuit Youth in Canada’s most remote communities across the North.

When we listen deeply and respond directly to youth-identified needs, we can create significant and meaningful changes quickly.

The next step is the creation of the Ankekuluk Youth Wellness Camp in Newfoundland, which is an organization/programming where youth take part in 10-week sessions that include:

Land-based learning guided by Elders and Inuit Values

Su***de Ideation Response Training

Activity and adventure-based therapies proven to work with Inuit learners

Mental health counselling

High school credit pathways, designed in collaboration with Northern educators, so time at camp moves youth close to graduation

Addressing family violence issues

Addressing sexual abuse issues

Addressing Inuit youth rights

Alcohol and drug issue awareness

Wellness and life skills training, from cooking to outdoor survival

Mentorship and peer-to-peer support, with Inuit Youth Leader roles to inspire and guide participants, while encouraging lifelong relationships where participants can draw strength and support from each other.

The camp and the Ankekuluk Program are not meant to be a one and done engagement, but rather a place youth return to after being participants to have opportunities to take on leadership roles, building a cycle of mentorship and community strength.
