A wonderful event to celebrate in Gander this Saturday!

Join us tomorrow, Saturday, May 30 for our Loukoumi Good Deed Celebration Day at Gander Elementary from 1-3 pm. Come see all the wonderful student projects and purchase a treat to support local charities and organizations . Together we can make a difference.

We’ve met some interesting characters over the years, but Kevin’s week ended on a high note with a visit from Cardinal.

St. Paul’s Intermediate mascot, Cardinal, dropped by the Gander & Area Food Bank to drop off 85 pounds of groceries that were donated by St. Paul’s students and teachers during Spirit Week.

We are thankful that our youth and local schools continue to consider others in need in our communities. That’s the way to show the very best spirit! Thank you to all involved!

The Gander & Area Food Bank is a registered charity that is hiring a summer student for the summer of 2026. We are looking for an energetic, reliable, self-starter who loves variety. We are offering a truly valuable work experience as we continue to serve families in our region who are struggling with food security.

Our student employee will be comfortable with computers including: data entry, utilizing our database software (Link2Feed), using Canva to create informational and promotional templates, filing, and managing social media. The successful candidate will play a significant role in daily operation of the Food Bank; checking food inventory, placing food orders, assisting volunteers on Food Bank shifts, interacting with clients, maintaining cleanliness of our premises and assisting our procurement team as needed.

Requirements of this position:
• Student hired within this grant must be either entering post-secondary in the fall, or a current post-secondary student returning to College or University studies in the fall.
• Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, organized, reliable and comfortable working independently. We are looking for a person who wants to work!
• Must be very comfortable with computers, accurate in data entry with excellent spelling skills.
• Must sign an Oath of Confidentiality and maintain the privacy of our clients.
• Although the position is mostly regular day time work hours, there may be some early evening work or occasional weekend hours. Some flexibility in availability is required.
• Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds for unloading and stocking groceries as needed.

Doing some spring cleaning? If you have gently used items you no longer need, consider donating them to the Gigantic Yard Sale at the Steele Community Centre.

The sale takes place May 30 from 9am–1pm. Admission is by donation to the Food Bank, and all proceeds from items sold go to local charities.

Item Drop-Off Times:
• May 23–24: 12pm–5pm
• May 25–28: 9am–5pm
• May 29: 9am–12pm

We don’t have a photo of our sweet donors, but we do have a photo of their ‘sweet’ gift. Thank you to the Gander Girl Guides and their leaders for their kind donations for children and families served by the Gander & Area Food Bank.

The Guides recently dropped off a wonderful bundle of all the supplies needed for many families to have a fabulous birthday celebration. The bundle included cake mixes, candles, pans, balloons, gift bags, banners, sprinkles and more! This is such a thoughtful donation, as things needed for celebrations are often taken off the shopping list when money is tight. We know that these party bundles will be gratefully enjoyed by many!

Thank you to the girl guides, leaders and parents for thinking of the families served by our charity.

Our friends at FYi Doctors in Gander have been back to support the families served by the Gander & Area Food Bank once again this year with a donation of $1,106.

Every year our local FYi Doctors raise money for their ‘Enhancing Lives Month’ in October. The clinic also raises money throughout the year with events such as jeans day, as well as book and puzzle sales.

It is wonderful to know that we have this generous support - a sincere thank you is extended to all staff and clients.
