It was a pleasure to meet with Vlad Valastiak, Executive Director of the Cowichan Sportsplex, to discuss how we can work together to expand sports and recreational opportunities across the Cowichan region.

Vlad brings a strong background in competitive sports and coaching, including with the Cowichan Valley Track and Field Club and Cowichan Valley Soccer Association. It was exciting to hear his ideas for working with community organizations to give more local youth opportunities to participate in sport and stay active.

There are some exciting projects underway. The Sportsplex is working with the Cowichan Trail Stewardship Society on a new pump track in the vacant parking lot at the corner of Lakes Road and Beverly Street. The pump track would be an asphalt circuit with rollers, banked corners and other features designed to build cycling skills and accommodate a wide variety of bikes. Similar pump tracks in Nanaimo, Victoria and Langford have become popular community amenities.

The Sportsplex is also working with the Cowichan Valley Soccer Association to identify a location for a second artificial turf field - an important investment that is badly needed to meet growing demand for soccer and other field sports in our region.

Thanks to North Cowichan Councillor Christopher Justice, who sits on the Cowichan Valley Regional District’s Core Recreation Commission, for joining the conversation.

I look forward to working with Vlad and the team at the Sportsplex, along with our community partners, to create more opportunities for people of all ages to get active and involved in sports and recreation.

Big things are happening at the Cowichan Sportsplex! We're adding two beach volleyball courts to our back parking lot! 🏐 They will be located next to the proposed pump track and will be available for rental, lessons, camps and drop in use. 100% of the costs have been fundraised and donated from local contractors including labour and equipment! 🙂 Construction should be finished soon and will then be available for use. Thank you to Cowichan Volley and everyone who has worked to make this possible! ❤
