BGC Greater Halifax

At our 4 Club sites in Greater Halifax.

BGC Greater Halifax Clubs help children and youth overcome barriers, access safe spaces, and develop leadership skills and positive relationships. We serve more than 3,700 children annually through before-and-after school, nutrition, education, leadership, camp, and recreation programs. We support kids and their families at seven club sites: East Dartmouth, Admiral Westphal, Alderney, Dartmouth North, Spryfield, Sackville, and Humber Park.

Thank you to SuperNOVA at Dalhousie University, Goodera, and BGC Canada.

Goodera donated a set of path-following robots to our Clubs through BGC Canada, and the team at Supernova assembled them and ran an activity with our summer campers. Caitlin and Erika were on site with us all week, and they were fabulous. They had kids drawing routes, testing them, and working out why a robot turned one way instead of the other.

Kids tend to decide early whether science and technology are for them, and that decision usually comes down to whether anyone ever put the equipment in front of them. This week, someone did. Thank you to Supernova, Goodera and BGC Canada for making that happen.

Volunteer with BGC Greater Halifax at the Creighton Street Mural Painting Day with Creighton Street Painting Project!

We're bringing a group of our youth to help bring this community mural to life and we'd love for you to join our cohort!

-Saturday, September 12
-10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
-Creighton Street (exact meeting spot shared with confirmed volunteers and there's an option to travel with our group from Dartmouth!)

No painting experience needed! Volunteers are needed for:

-Water station
-Info station
-Sign-in
-Supplies & organization
-And of course, helping paint the mural!

Wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes you don't mind getting paint on.

Growing, Learning & a Little Pizza Making!

A huge shout-out and heartfelt THANK YOU to Nourish NS for being such an incredible community partner to our Dartmouth North Summer Camp this year!

Throughout the summer, our campers had the opportunity to visit each week, getting their hands in the garden, tending to what was growing, and taking part in fun, engaging activities that helped them learn more about where our food comes from, how it grows, and the importance of healthy, nutritious choices.

And what better way to wrap up a summer of learning than by turning some of that food knowledge into something delicious? PIZZA!

These are the kinds of community experiences that make summer at the Club so special—learning beyond our walls, trying new things, building connections, and having a whole lot of fun along the way.

To the team at , thank you for welcoming our campers week after week and for sharing your time, knowledge, enthusiasm, and space with us.

The final round of the Survivor Challenge. This week's Core Value is Speaking Out.

Dartmouth North's groups went to the wildlife park this week. Back at the Club, a few kids asked for a chance to tell the group about their favourite part of the day. The photos show one of them standing in the middle of the gym with everyone sitting around her, hands going up. Their explanation is that these kids feel comfortable using their voices in front of their peers and that everyone gets the chance to share because their voices matter.

East Dartmouth handed the definition to the campers. In their words, speaking out means being loud and proud of who we are. The photo backs it up: six kids caught mid-jump in an empty gym, all of them off the floor at once.

Sackville broke it into its everyday parts. Asking questions and learning from activities and experiences. Standing up for yourself and your friends. Voicing what you're passionate about, which this week meant egg drops. Speaking out starts with a kid feeling allowed to ask something out loud.

Thank you to Planet Fitness Halifax and Dartmouth for hosting a back-to-school drive for BGC Greater Halifax Clubs again this year, and thank you to their members for showing up with bags of supplies.

School supplies are expensive. For some of the families we work with, that cost hits at the same time as shoes, clothes, and everything else September asks of a household budget. A drive like this takes the pressure off, and it means kids start the year with what they need instead of doing without.

Planet Fitness has been doing this for three years now. We notice, and so do the kids. Thank you.

Thank you to the Kiwanis Club of Dartmouth for hosting our Dartmouth North and East Dartmouth summer campers at Morris Lake this past Friday.

Hot dogs on the grill, an afternoon by the water, and a group of volunteers who made every kid feel welcome. Our members had a blast!

Our Annual Breakfast is back, and it's happening inside one of our clubs again. The same space where kids drop their backpacks after school, work through homework, and find the mentors who stay in their lives for years.

This is our largest fundraiser of the year, presented by Eastlink and Delta Hotels by Marriott Dartmouth. It funds programming for more than 1,400 children and youth across Dartmouth North, East Dartmouth, Spryfield, and Sackville.

Hosting and speaking this year: Bruce Rainnie, President and CEO of the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame. You'll know his voice from 23 years at CBC, 12 Olympic Games, and curling play-by-play at Milano-Cortina this past winter.

Tickets are $125 for a seat or $1,000 for a table of eight. Every dollar goes straight to programs.

Round four of the Survivor Challenge. This week's Core Value is Working Together, and we have entries from all four Club sites.

The earlier values were things a kid could feel. This one only shows up when something needs doing. You can't see working together in a photo of kids being friendly. You see it when there's a task, a problem, or a deadline, and the group sorts itself out.

Dartmouth North sent the one that happened without warning. Their group was at the splash pad when they realized rain was coming. Two members took it upon themselves to gather every member's bag into one spot and gave up their own towels to cover the bags. Nobody assigned that. Two kids saw a problem coming and solved it for everyone else.

Sackville widened the frame past the Club walls. Their point is that achievements feel bigger and problems feel smaller when everyone works together, and sometimes that means working with the community rather than just each other. This week that meant partnering with SuperNOVA at Dalhousie University and Hope For Wildlife to build experiences the Club couldn't create alone.

East Dartmouth put older members in charge. Togetherness there is learning from each other, with older members designing and running games for the younger ones. The photo is a youth member mid-explanation with a crowd of younger kids leaning in.

Spryfield went with range. Building a tower, being astronauts at the Discovery Centre, making a giant wall to knock down and rebuild, finding a seat on a busy ferry, and helping each other through a craft or STEM project. Working together shows up in all of it, including the unglamorous parts.

Round three of the Survivor Challenge. This week's Core Value is Encouragement and Support.

The first two rounds were about how kids treat each other. This one is different, because encouragement usually comes from someone who has nothing to gain from giving it. It costs the person offering it something and gives them nothing back. That is why it means so much to a kid on the receiving end.

Both submissions this week put staff at the centre, which says something on its own.

Sackville's entry is a photo of a staff member on a dock with two campers, one under each arm. Their explanation is about relationships. Through the relationships built at the Club, kids encourage and support each other in making good choices, forming lifelong friendships, and trying things they haven't tried before. Encouragement travels through relationship, not instruction.

East Dartmouth pointed at their staff team directly. When they think about encouragement and support, the first thing that comes to mind is each other. All summer long the team supports and uplifts one another, because when one rises they all rise. East Rising. Their collage is a summer's worth of staff showing up for each other, and the kids are in every frame watching them do it.
