Elder Abuse doesnโ€™t start with a black eye or any tangible physical signs. Commonly it begins just like any other relationship. The abuse usually starts with subtle signs that seem harmless at the time; playful nagging or teasing supposedly done in jest, or attempts at controlling behavior. At first, it may seem that your caregiver or loved one is simply invested in the relationship, but this slowly spirals into their being in total control.

Slowly your partner, caregiver, relative, or the one using someone else, may begin to subtly blame you for things beyond your control or pick at your faults. This may devolve into verbal or physical abuse and is often the description given by the abused elderly. The perpetrators are always someone they know, and often someone they care about. We are here for you

Did you know that Vikki, our Program Manager at Camrose and District Victim Services is trained and certified in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) for individual and group crisis intervention? CISM is designed to help individuals deal with the effects of a traumatic event or critical incident.

VSU offers:
Rest, Information, and Transition Services (RITS) - Quick informational and rest session applied when operations units have been released from service at a major incident such as a disaster that requires a huge commitment of resources. FOR EMERGENCY SERVICES, HOSPITALS, AND MILITARY ONLY.
Critical Management Briefing (CMB) -An informational group crisis intervention technique for heterogeneous (unknown to each other) groups or large groups (possibly up to 300 people in the same session in some circumstances.) It may be implemented with civilians after disasters or other large-scale events.
Defusing - A shortened version of the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) that is provided within hours of the traumatic event for homogenous groups only (existing relationships, thought of as a unit)
Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) - A structured, interactive group crisis intervention process for homogeneous groups only. It is an active, temporary, and supportive group crisis intervention process that focuses on building up a group's resistance to traumatic stressors and applied 24-72 hours after the traumatic event.

EDITORIAL: The changes by the province to the way victim service units are run are threatening to remove vital aspects of the safety net that could impact the delivery of services to rural areas such as the Bow Valley.
