The right to organize, the right to collectively bargain, and the right to strike. These are fundamental rights that people in the labor movement have fought and died for. The right to strike is the only thing that forces companies to bargain fairly, without it the whole system crumbles.

(le français suit) Today, Teamsters Canada President François Laporte testified before the Senate on Bill C-39.

No single minister should have the power to suspend workers' right to strike.

The government says Bill C-39 puts guardrails on the minister's power. In reality, it's just a series of rubber stamps. A mediator files a report, a minister decides a strike threatens the national interest, and it's over.

Under Bill C-39, there is no debate or due process. No accountability or so-called guardrails.

When employers know the government will end a dispute for them, they stop bargaining seriously. That means more conflict, not less.

We simply cannot protect Canada's national interest by restricting the rights of Canadian workers.

Aujourd'hui, le président de Teamsters Canada, François Laporte, a témoigné devant le Sénat au sujet du projet de loi C-39.

Aucun ministre ne devrait, à lui seul, avoir le pouvoir de suspendre le droit de grève des travailleuses et des travailleurs.

Le gouvernement affirme que le projet de loi C-39 encadre le pouvoir du ministre avec des garde-fous. En réalité, on parle de simples formalités. Un médiateur dépose un rapport, un ministre décide qu'une grève menace l'intérêt national, et c'est terminé.

Avec le projet de loi C-39, il n'y a ni débat, ni reddition de comptes, ni prétendus garde-fous.

Quand les employeurs savent que le gouvernement va régler un conflit à leur place, ils cessent de négocier sérieusement. Résultat : plus de conflits, pas moins.

Nous ne pouvons tout simplement pas protéger l'intérêt national du Canada en restreignant les droits des travailleuses et des travailleurs canadiens.

A proud milestone for Teamsters Local 362!

Yesterday marked our inaugural first-year Industrial Construction Warehouse Apprenticeship training, bringing our first group of apprentices together to build their skills and advance their careers.

Investing in training means investing in our members, strengthening our trade, and preparing the next generation of skilled Teamsters for the opportunities ahead.

Congratulations to our first group of apprentices, and thank you to everyone who helped make this milestone possible. We’re proud to be part of your journey!

Teamsters Local 362 stands in solidarity with our Sisters and Brothers at UA Local 488 following the shooting reported in their parking lot this morning.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected, including the staff, members, instructors, students and their families. Everyone deserves to feel safe at their union hall, at work and in their community.

We echo Local 488’s call to follow police direction and avoid speculation or sharing unverified information.
