05/25/26 Today, the City of Calgary recognizes National Brown-Bag-It Day with a proclamation presented at Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids (BB4CK). This day shines light on food insecurity and its impact on children and their families, while celebrating the power of people coming together to support the community.💫
Food insecurity means not having reliable access to enough nutritious food to live a healthy and active life. For many families, rising costs and financial hardship make it difficult to consistently put healthy meals on the table and children are often the ones most affected.
Last week, Holly Dunbar and Lana Kostiuk, repping Calgary Pageants titleholders, had the privilege of volunteering with Brown Bagging for Calgary's Kids. We were welcomed into the kitchen alongside an incredible team of volunteers as we prepared fresh fruit and vegetable snacks: 4,413 portions of fruit and 3,711 portions of vegetables. 🍊🥕🫛
Every school day, this program supports close to 8,000 children in 280 schools throughout Calgary. By providing nutritious lunches and snacks to those in need, students are better able to learn, participate in activities, build friendships, and simply enjoy being kids while feeling nourished and cared for.
As a retired teacher, I witnessed firsthand the growing number of families relying on food donations and community support while facing food insecurity. Over the years, the need has become increasingly visible, reminding us that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, play, and grow with the energy and nourishment they need to thrive.
