This Thanksgiving, Calgary Salutes thanks the military cooks who feed Canadian Armed Forces members at home and on deployment.

They serve at bases and wings, with land-based units, and aboard ships and submarines. Their work includes preparing nutritious meals, keeping food safe and meeting religious and spiritual dietary needs.

Trenches needed timber. No. 2 Construction Battalion helped supply it.

Formed in Pictou, Nova Scotia, in July 1916, the battalion was a segregated unit created after Black Canadians pressed for the opportunity to serve despite barriers to enlistment.

In 1917, its members went to eastern France to work with the Canadian Forestry Corps. They helped provide lumber for front-line trenches, improve roads and build a railway.

This photograph shows New Brunswick members of the battalion’s band in 1917. Their service is part of a history that extends well beyond the battlefield.

During Alberta’s 2013 floods, getting people to safety sometimes meant bringing in a military helicopter.

This Department of National Defence photograph shows soldiers helping a CH-146 Griffon crew evacuate people stranded in a provincial park in June 2013.

After Alberta requested assistance, the Canadian Armed Forces responded to the southern Alberta floods under Operation LENTUS 13-01. Their mission was humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, supporting the civilian response.

Military service also means helping people through a disaster at home.

Peacekeeping is not a single job.

Monitoring ceasefires is one part of the work. Peacekeeping roles can also include patrolling buffer zones, clearing landmines, helping refugees and providing humanitarian aid. The responsibilities depend on the mission.

Canada's peacekeeping story includes military members, police officers and civilians.

This photograph shows two Canadian peacekeepers loading food supplies onto a truck in East Timor in 1999. It is one example of the practical work behind that history.

Preparing to leave the Canadian Armed Forces? You do not have to work out every next step alone.

Veterans Affairs Canada recommends booking a transition interview early in your release process. It is available to Regular Force and Reserve members who have started, or are planning to start, that process. Your family is encouraged to attend too.

The interview helps you identify your needs, learn about services and benefits, and ask questions about life after military service.

To request an interview, call 1-866-522-2122, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time, or send a secure message through My VAC Account.

Details and booking options:

Calgary roots. Service today.

The Calgary Highlanders (10th Canadians) are an Army Reserve infantry regiment based at Mewata Armoury and part of 41 Canadian Brigade Group.

The regiment traces its origins to April 1, 1910. Today, its members continue a local connection to military service through the Army Reserve.

For Calgarians exploring part-time service, the unit’s official page explains its roles, training schedule and how to contact a recruiter.

Connect with The Calgary Highlanders Regimental Association for more from Calgary’s regimental community.

The Somme’s opening day carried a devastating cost for Newfoundland.

On July 1, 1916, the 1st Newfoundland Regiment attacked at Beaumont-Hamel while attached to a British division. The regiment suffered devastating losses as it advanced across open ground.

The Canadian War Museum notes that no Canadian infantry units participated in that first-day attack. Keeping these histories distinct helps us understand the people and units who served on the Somme.

We remember the Newfoundlanders who served, those who died and the families changed by their loss.
