802 steps, one amazing community! 🏙️💪

Centre for Newcomers CEO Nketti Johnston-Taylor and several members of the CFN were thrilled to join The Immigrant Education Society - TIES for the Climb Strong 2026 fundraiser at the Calgary Tower. We’re proud to show up for our community partner and support the vital work they do for newcomers. It was also great to see The Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth CEO Frank Cattoni hit the steps with us too!

A huge congratulations to TIES, their CEO Sally Zhao and CPO Suman Khanal, the 120 climbers, 32 volunteers, and all the sponsors. This is what happens when a community climbs together! 🎉👏

The Centre for Newcomers helps fuel Calgary's economic engine by helping newcomers thrive — and help Calgary thrive because of them. We equip newcomers with the skills, language, and supports to succeed in the workforce and in their communities, and we work with employers, industry, and partners to integrate the talent and contribution they bring. Newcomers help build Calgary. CFN helps build newcomers.

Settlement is more than arriving in a new country. It is a long, courageous journey of turning unfamiliar streets into home. Finding work, learning a language, building community, and discovering where you belong.

At the Centre for Newcomers, for nearly 40 years, settlement means walking alongside the people we serve with passion as they find their footing in a new and unfamiliar place. It doesn’t mean telling someone where they belong; it means helping them discover that belonging for themselves - in their home, their work, their relationships, and in their contribution to Calgary.

More than 1,500 markers now cover the 15-foot map at the CFN, each one showing a country someone calls home.

The map took shape during our FIFA World Cup watch parties, where community members came together to cheer on Team Canada and share a little of their own story.

Created to make people feel represented and welcomed, the map was commissioned by the Centre for Newcomers in partnership with The City of Calgary – Your Local Government, Explore Downtown YYC, Calgary Wild FC, Cavalry FC, and Calgary Minor Soccer Association. It was amazingly designed by Trevor Cobb and our friends at Wanderlust Creatures to be part of the celebrations and then become a permanent feature in our space.

Today, it reflects the many places and people that make Calgary home—a vibrant reminder that every story belongs🙋🏼🙋🏿‍♀️🙋🏽‍♂️🙋‍♀️

Building skills and confidence, one brushstroke at a time! A strong workforce depends on welcoming and supporting new workers who are ready to learn, grow, and build their future in the trades. Our EPCO painting cohort is helping bring fresh, enthusiastic talent into the trades.

Through hands-on training, participants are learning the essential skills of the painting profession: preparing surfaces, taping, patching and sanding, cutting in clean edges, and creating an even finish with brushes and rollers.

They’re putting those skills to work and along the way, they’re building confidence, strengthening teamwork, and developing the care and attention to detail that will help them contribute to the trades. A special thank you to Jonas Driving School Calgary for opening your doors and helping nurture the next generation of painting professionals.

In today's world, diversity is a fact, equity a choice, Inclusion an action, and belonging a desired outcome for all those who live out the human experience. We find solutions and seek to improve upon that which came before us. We aspire to harness the inspiration that surrounds us and explore the possibilities. We collaboratively curate the passion of our communities and translate passion into action.
