Poverty is rarely just one thing.

It can mean struggling to afford groceries after rent is paid. It can mean not having reliable transportation to get to work, feeling isolated without a support system, or facing barriers that make it harder to move forward.

Poverty is about more than income. It can affect stability, dignity, belonging, opportunity and hope.
Leading up to October 17, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, WINS is continuing the conversation about the many ways poverty can show up in the lives of women and their families, and why addressing it means looking at the whole picture.

Over the coming days, we’ll explore the different dimensions of poverty, the barriers women and families face, and the pathways that can help create greater stability.
Because poverty costs more than money.

Poverty is Rarely Just One Thing

As the cost of food, housing and everyday essentials continues to rise, more Calgarians are struggling to make ends meet. At WINS, the need for our services has more than doubled compared with last year, with women and families facing increasingly complex challenges.

Today, we’re launching our Poverty Awareness Campaign leading up to the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll explore what poverty looks like beyond income, including material, social and spiritual poverty -and how these challenges can intersect in the lives of women and their families.

Our President & CEO, Karen Ramchuk, and Community Impact Director, Peggy Mocarquer, recently spoke with City News Calgary about the growing and increasingly complex needs facing our community.

Follow along as we build awareness, challenge how we think about poverty and share how WINS is helping create pathways toward greater stability, connection and belonging.

Today, September 30, WINS recognizes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We take this day to honour Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the families and communities impacted by Canada's residential school system. We acknowledge the lasting and intergenerational impacts of residential schools and the strength and resilience of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.
Reconciliation requires more than reflection.

WINS remains committed to listening, learning, building meaningful relationships, and continuing our own journey toward reconciliation within our organization and the communities we serve.

Here in Calgary, we recognize the Indigenous Peoples who have cared for and maintained relationships with these lands for generations, as well as the many Indigenous people who call Calgary home today.

We encourage our community to take time to learn about the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools, listen to the voices and experiences of Survivors, and support Indigenous-led organizations and initiatives.

May today be a time for reflection, learning, remembrance and continued action toward reconciliation.
