When Simone Chiang first started her journey in Canada, she never imagined the kind of impact she would have on her new community. But now, as a BCIT Master of Engineering in Smart Grid Systems and Technologies graduate and 2026 BCIT School of Energy valedictorian, she has become a prominent student leader who has helped shape student experience across BCIT.

Leading with purpose and a genuine care for others, Simone assumed various leadership positions in the community where she created new opportunities for BCIT students to thrive and connect with industry professionals. A champion for diversity and progress, she also led as Co-Chair of the Pride BCIT committee and Chair of BCIT's Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Simone has established herself as an individual who is willing to go the extra mile, to both grow as a person and spark change in the world around her.

"Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone," says Simone. "Invest in yourself, meet new people, and do what you feel passionate about. It's always about learning something new."

At the 2026 Vision Awards, BCIT will honour Simone with an Outstanding Student Leadership Award, in recognition of her contributions to the BCIT community, on October 29th.

What happens when more than 300 alumni and community members come together to talk about AI?

A lot of curiosity, learning, and inspiration.

Thank you to everyone who joined the BCIT Alumni Association's From AI-Overwhelmed to AI-Empowered workshop. We were delighted by the tremendous response and engagement from attendees eager to learn practical ways to save time, improve their work, and use AI with greater confidence.

A heartfelt thank you to AI educator and BCIT alumna El Wong for sharing her knowledge, insights, and approachable guidance throughout the session. El helped transform AI from something that can feel overwhelming into a tool participants can use with purpose and confidence.

Building a better tomorrow has always been a driving force for Andrey Lykov. Since the start of his professional development back in Russia, Andrey’s passion for expanding high-performance and sustainable infrastructure has been at the forefront of his journey. His desire to improve the world around him has been a constant even throughout his time at BCIT.

Before completing the Master of Applied Science in Building Engineering/Building Science program, Andrey co-founded the BCIT Building Science Club, creating not just a thriving community, but a lasting network that connects students and industry professionals. Through his leadership, Andrey created new opportunities for current and future students, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to enrich student experiences at BCIT.

“Good work is not done in isolation or fear,” says Andrey. “Don’t wait until you feel experienced or confident enough. You need to have the courage to grow and question. It’s a process of taking small steps.”

At the 2026 Vision Awards, BCIT will honour Andrey with an Outstanding Student Leadership Award, in recognition of his contributions to the BCIT community, on October 29th.

Alumni Spotlight: Desmand King

Meet Desmand King, Founder of indie game studio, Oshki Games, and graduate of BCIT's Digital Design and Development program. As a passionate creative and proud Anishinaabe, Desmand aims to foster inclusive collaboration and empower Indigenous voices within the interactive arts space.

Desmand credits BCIT’s multidisciplinary approach with giving him the confidence and adaptive mindset to build and lead the team at Oshki Games. With the debut of the studio’s first fully funded project, THORN, Desmand is looking forward to bringing the game to new audiences and preparing it for a full retail release.

THORN is a 3rd-person interactive art installation fusing horror, video game design, and storytelling to create an immersive gaming experience. Inspired by Desmand’s own journey, THORN takes players through an abstract narrative to tell a compelling story of reclamation.
