October 10 is World Mental Health Day đź’š

Mental health is brain health, at every stage of childhood and adolescence.
For children and youth with neurodisabilities, well-being is shaped by many things: access to the right supports, strong relationships, and schools and communities where they can participate and belong.

Today, let's keep building inclusive communities where every child, young person and family can thrive.

📣 Healing Children’s Pain Together: Community Priorities for Alberta’s Path Forward

Researchers are inviting young people under 25 with neurodisabilities, family members and caregivers, health workers, and community members to take part in a survey to help identify the Top 10 priorities for pain research in Alberta.

Your input will help shape the priorities that are shared with researchers, funders, health workers and the public, helping guide future research, care and policy toward what matters most to young people and the people who support them.

👉 Take the survey:

The Healing Children’s Pain Together Priority Setting Partnership will identify uncertainties, priorities, and questions about pain and pain care across populations who are disproportionately impacted by pain yet face the greatest barriers to accessing quality, equitable pain care.

How can better coordination between governments improve access to disability services?

Dr. Sarah Raza, one of the first ADVANCE Network Fellows, mapped ministerial responsibilities for delivering disability services and assessed efficiency across systems in Canada.

Her findings highlight the importance of coordination across ministries and levels of government, alongside more inclusive, trust-based eligibility approaches.

By examining how disability programs are designed and delivered, her work helps identify opportunities to create a more equitable support system for children, youth and families.

We invite service providers and leaders working in Canadian child and youth rehabilitation settings to participate in a 15-minute online survey that is part of the SPARCC (Social Prescribing to Enhance Access in Rehabilitation for Children and Caregivers) research program. We aim to learn about how you and your organization are doing social prescribing and the associated tools you use in practice.

The study is led by Dr. Michelle Phoenix through CanChild Centre for Childhood-onset Disability Research at McMaster University and funded through Kids Brain Health Network (KBHN) and Brain Canada. Interested participants can scan the poster QR code or click the survey link to learn more about the study and complete the survey: https://buff.ly/edScnOL.

We ask that participants please complete the survey by October 31, 2026. You can also email [email protected] for more information or if you have any questions.

October 6 is World Cerebral Palsy Day đź’š

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common physical disability in childhood. It affects movement, posture and coordination differently for each person, and everyone with CP brings their own strengths, experiences and needs.

Today, Kids Brain Health is raising awareness, celebrating the contributions of people with cerebral palsy, and championing inclusive communities, accessible supports and evidence-informed care.

Together, we can build a world where every child and young person with cerebral palsy has what they need to thrive.

October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month in Canada.

Learning disabilities can affect how children and youth read, write, communicate and take part in everyday activities. Greater awareness builds understanding, reduces stigma and opens the door to the tools and accommodations that help kids thrive.

This month, Kids Brain Health is recognizing diverse learning needs and supporting children, youth and families with evidence-informed approaches.

Who gets access to disability supports, and who gets left out?

As part of the inaugural cohort of ADVANCE Network Fellows, Dr. Laura Mudde examined access to early intervention and developmental supports for children across Canada. Her research makes the gaps visible and connects them to actionable solutions and measurable outcomes.

Through community-informed research, the ADVANCE Network is working toward more equitable disability policies for children, youth, and families.
