Today's Active Communities Grant project spotlight is on Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation! Their Surf and Spirit project supported youth health and well-being.

This culturally-centred project delivered instruction in surf and snow sports and other physical and holistic wellness activities to youth. The project built camaraderie, cultural knowledge and stewardship practices among Indigenous youth across Nuu-chah-nulth territories as part of the Nuu-chah-nulth Surf Team Mułaa. See more below!

Thank you, Minister Josie Osborne for your leadership! We are so grateful for your support of initiatives that make it easier for people of all ages to be physically active close to home.

As someone who loves getting outside, I know how much being active can improve your mood, your health, and your connection to the people around you.

Whether it's kids discovering a new sport, neighbours joining a walking group, or families spending time together outdoors, these activities help build stronger communities.

That's why support for community and after-school physical activity programs matters. It helps more people participate, make connections, and experience the benefits of an active lifestyle close to home.

Together, we’re building healthier, more connected communities. 💙

📣 We are excited to share the Province's announcement of their continued support for initiatives making it easier to be active close to home.

The $1-million provincial investment will fund a new round of Active Communities Grants for Indigenous and local governments, increase after-school Active Play Club programs and promote health through physical activity by continuing support for the Physical Activity for Health Collaborative.

We are deeply appreciative of the partnership with and support of the Ministry of Health.

Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Cook’s Ferry band members, and Nlaka’pamux members collaborated to reframe exercise through the lens of traditional practices. The project “shows how Indigenous knowledge systems can guide innovative health programs, and connect members to culture, well-being, and the land.”

The Office of the Provincial Health Officer has released the much-anticipated report, Living Well, Drinking Less: Reducing Alcohol-related Harms in BC

The report recommendations align closely with the recommendations BCAHL has advanced to address the health risks and harms associated with alcohol consumption — including shifting to minimum unit pricing, adding warning labels, and creating more awareness-raising opportunities.

Proud to be part of this op-ed in the The Vancouver Sun: It's time to 'unmask the appeal' of youth va**ng.

"Walk past a group of teenagers today and you are more likely to smell mango or cotton candy than to***co smoke. Ni****ne addiction has not disappeared — it has just been repackaged." And there are serious health consequences for young people in our province.
