Today, we celebrate the people, cultures, communities and natural beauty that make this province so special.

Across BC, midwives care for families in urban, rural, remote and Indigenous communities. While many of us enjoy time with family and friends this long weekend, midwives throughout the province will also be on call, ready to welcome BC’s newest residents.

Happy BC Day!

Today, we celebrate the people, cultures, communities and natural beauty that make this province such a special place to live and work.

Midwives provide care in communities throughout BC, from busy urban centres to rural, remote and Indigenous communities. This long weekend, many will be spending time with family and friends, enjoying the outdoors or taking part in community events, while others will be on call and welcoming BC’s newest residents.

Wherever the weekend takes you, MABC wishes all our members a safe, restful and happy BC Day!

STANDING TOGETHER WITH BC NURSES

As MABC enters negotiations on behalf of BC midwives, we are reminded that strengthening one part of our health-care system strengthens us all. We will continue to advocate for the supports midwives need to thrive in practice while standing alongside our nursing colleagues in the shared goal of ensuring safe, accessible, high-quality care for people and families throughout British Columbia.

National Indigenous Peoples Day – June 21

National Indigenous Peoples Day falls on the Summer Solstice, a time of cultural and spiritual significance for many Indigenous Peoples and communities. It is an opportunity to celebrate and learn about the rich cultures, histories, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

MABC encourages midwives and their communities to explore local events and celebrations taking place across BC on June 21.

Whether through music, art, storytelling, food, or cultural activities, these events offer meaningful opportunities to learn, connect, and celebrate together.

Pride is a celebration of love, identity, community, and belonging.

Midwives have the privilege of caring for people and families from many different backgrounds, experiences, and walks of life. We believe everyone deserves compassionate, respectful care where they feel seen, heard, and supported.

This month, we celebrate the diversity and strength of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities across British Columbia and reaffirm our commitment to inclusive care for all.

World Environment Day - June 5

Healthy environments support healthy pregnancies, healthy families, and healthy communities.

Across BC, midwives support families through climate-related challenges such as extreme heat, wildfire smoke, and community disruptions while providing accessible, community-based care.

This World Environment Day, we recognize the connection between environmental health and perinatal health—and the important role midwives play in building resilient communities.

Advancing Equitable Access to Perinatal Care

Everyone deserves respectful, non-judgmental perinatal care.

On International S*x Workers' Day, we recognize that stigma and fear of judgment can create barriers to accessing care. Midwives are committed to providing evidence-informed, culturally safe, relationship-based care that helps reduce barriers and build trust for those accessing perinatal services.

Creating culturally safe and inclusive care experiences is an important step toward improving health equity for all.

June is National Indigenous History Month.

MABC recognizes and honours the histories, cultures, knowledge systems, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, and celebrates the enduring traditions and leadership of Indigenous midwives and birthworkers.

MABC works collaboratively with the Indigenous Midwives Council of BC (IMCBC) to help advance Indigenous midwifery and support community-centred care rooted in culture, respect, relationship, and Indigenous ways of knowing.

Throughout June, we will be highlighting the work, vision, and leadership of the IMCBC across our newsletters and social media channels.

Midwives are a vital part of BC’s healthcare system—and on International Day of the Midwife, we join the global community in recognizing the essential role midwives play in supporting safe, respectful, and evidence-informed care for families during pregnancy, birth, and beyond.

This international day highlights the dedication, impact, and resilience of midwives everywhere, and celebrates the essential care they provide to families every single day—often during life’s most significant and transformative moments.
