Lucien (Lou) Lessard tell his whole story in this remarkable interview with volunteer Rod Mickleburgh. Yes, he talks about the collapse of the Second Narrows Bridge, but he also talks about the rest of his career; flying under a burnt-out bridge in a helicopter, shooting a line across a canyon with a bow-and-arrow to start a suspension bridge, walking on a catwalk across the main cable of the Lions' Gate Bridge.

"Blood was streaming down my face, and there's all kinds of media taking pictures. It was a goon that hit me."

When postal workers went on strike in 1991, the employer hired an army of scabs, and then an army of goons to protect the scabs. This was exactly the sort of situation that tended to flare up, but at the suggestion of the Women's Committee, the union was formally committed to non-violence.

So when a punch landed on Brian face, he walked through the picket line with pride. He may have needed stitches, but the symbolic black eye on the post office was worth it.

Brian Charlton spent three decades as a postal worker and activist with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, including seven years as president of CUPW STTP Local 846.
