Valleys 2000 furthers the development of the hiking trails and the living outdoor activity area within the Bowmanville and Soper Creek Valley, which are river valleys running through the heart of Bowmanville, Ontario. We are dedicated to the rehabilitation and environmental enhancement of quality urban parklands and trail systems in the two Bowmanville valleys:

Bowmanville Creek Valley north from

Baseline Rd. It has been occupied by Native Americans who came to fish its rich waters, by early European settlers who used the water power for their businesses, and by the Canadian army as a training camp. With its improved trails and walking paths, it is a destination for many visitors year round. Both Bowmanville Creek and Soper Creek are important spawning waterways for trout and salmon, attracting anglers from far and wide. Both valleys have become home to a wide range of vegetation, trees, wild animals and birds. Within walking distance of downtown Bowmanville, both areas are places where townspeople can enjoy walking, biking, or just sitting and enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings. Valleys 2000 began as a millennium project, initiated by the Clarington Healthy Communities Committee and the Bowmanville Lions Club, along with other interested citizens. was demolished. In it’s place, the Town, along with various community groups, established the Rotary Park. A new stairway down to the valley as well as a footbridge across the creek ensured public access to Bowmanville Valley from the heart of downtown Bowmanville. Once this access was assured, Valleys 2000 commissioned the development of a concept plan for the valley. This plan was refined according to public input & the mandate of the Bowmanville Valley(s) - Valleys 2000 - was established – ‘To provide passive recreation for persons of all ages & activity levels while protecting & enhancing the fish & wildlife habitats.’

Municipal Council voted unanimously to endorse the work of Valleys 2000 & has shown support through a partnership agreement, as well as donations of staff time, meeting space, administrative support & an interest-free loan. We have also received provincial government funding, a generous donation from the Bowmanville Lions Club & a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The Bowmanville Creek Anglers Association has provided technical expertise & advice. Local businesses, school groups & youth organizations have volunteered to contribute their labours as well as equipment & materials. Recognition: In December 2000 the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority presented Valleys 2000 with a Community Group Watershed Award. This award is in recognition is in ‘recognition of efforts to provide recreational amenities and trail development while improving the ecological health of the Bowmanville Creek and surrounding ecosystem.’

A 2010 survey showed that over 1000 folks used the Bowmanville Creek Valley trails on a rainy weekend. A lot of users were couples walking or jogging together enjoying the nature. Many people brought their dogs to socialize with other dogs, something they do regularly. We also made note of the large number of wheelchairs, electric carts, bicycles, skateboards, & baby strollers, which shows that our goal of providing the widest usage for the greatest number of people is being attained. We need the input from the users of the Valleys to provide us with feedback as to suggestions to further improve these areas. Keep in mind, we are a volunteer-driven organization – the more volunteers we have, the more we are able to accomplish.

🌿☀️ Long Weekend Adventures Await in the Valleys! ☀️🌿

As we head into the long weekend and enjoy this beautiful stretch of warm spring weather, we encourage everyone to get outside, explore, and reconnect with nature right here in our own community. 💚

The Valleys 2000 trail system offers so many wonderful places to discover - from the main Bowmanville trail paths to hidden gems like the Woodland Trail tucked quietly among the trees. Whether you’re out for a peaceful walk, a bike ride, birdwatching, photography, or simply looking for a moment to breathe and unwind, there’s something special waiting around every corner.

Be sure to also stop by the Bowmanville Butterfly Garden and take in the early blooms, fresh greenery, and signs of new life emerging for the season. Community spaces like these thrive because of the passion, care, and support of local volunteers and residents who help keep these natural areas beautiful for everyone to enjoy.

A few shovels in the ground can represent something much bigger! 🌱

May 11th marked the official ground breaking for a future 13.7-hectare municipal park here in Clarington! A space that will one day bring together families, walkers, cyclists, children, neighbours, and community for years to come.

Projects like this are about more than infrastructure.
They are about connection. About creating places where people gather, recharge, celebrate, and simply spend time together outdoors.
We’re excited to see this vision begin to take shape and proud to witness another investment in community, recreation, and green space within our region.

Over the next few months, several trails will go in to the old zoo property with access points close to the Mearns/King intersection extending out to the existing Soper Creek Trail near Mearns Park. This is the first phase of several planned for over the coming years.

Exciting times ahead of us all and please continue to watch this page as we post updates on the trails that are going in!

Spring is waking up in the Valley!

Soon the pollinators will be buzzing through the Butterfly Garden — bees, butterflies, and other tiny helpers hard at work among the blooms. It’s one of the surest signs that warmer days are here and summer is just around the corner.

Take a stroll through the Valley, enjoy the fresh air, and stop by the Butterfly Garden to see nature come alive again. You never know what colourful visitor you might spot!

Some people only like to look at the butterflies, while others like to take pictures as well. Valleys 2000 try to help the butterfly population by planting native plants which rare or threatened…

A little reminder from the Bowmanville Valley: please scoop the p**p! 🐾

We love seeing dogs enjoying the trails with their humans, but nobody enjoys an unexpected “nature surprise” on their walk. Please bring a bag, clean up after your pup, and help keep the Valley beautiful, safe, and welcoming for everyone — walkers, runners, kids, volunteers, and other four-legged visitors.

Your dog may think they’re leaving a gift for the community, but trust us… it’s one gift we’d all prefer you take with you. 😊

Thanks for helping us care for the Bowmanville Valley!
