For those not on Instagram, you might have missed this fantastic explainer about the proposed Yarraville Level Crossing Removal.

BikeWest supports a pedestrianised Anderson Street, and a rideable ramp across the tracks north of the existing crossing point that can easily link to the Veloway via Bellairs Av and Berry/Princess.

We're also excited for a quieter and safer Anderson Street that links Cruickshank Park to the village by bike.

***New tram stop design sets Community up for a bike vs parking fight on Droop Street***

DTP’s plans for new level boarding tram stops on Droop Street are very welcome. As are the new low-floor G Class trams. They’ll improve public transport to the new Footscray Hospital. They also include provision for future bike lanes.

In the current design, one-way bike lanes “roll over” the tram stops, as they do in other parts of Melbourne, including Swanston Street.

Unfortunately, connecting those lanes along Droop Street would require removing *all* parking.

We welcome safe cycling corridors, especially between our two biggest activity centres, Footscray and Highpoint. But we’ve seen what happens when a Council proposes removing parking. Any future Council that suggests connecting the bikelanes between the tram stops on Droop will walk into a massive sh*t-fight.

There’s a better option. If the tram stops supported a single two-way bike lane on one side of Droop, parking could be retained on the other side.

Maribyrnong Council has voted unanimously to write to DTP and ask for a better design. We think a two-way lane is what that design should look like.

BikeWest will share DTP’s response, if it’s made public.

Last week, Maribyrnong Council voted in favour to improve Barkly Street in Footscray!!! 😁😁😁

The project includes new pedestrian crossings, improved footpaths, median strip tree plantings, level boarding bus stops and significantly, Council's first new protected bike lanes in 5 years!

Construction on the project is scheduled to start next year, in conjunction with a planned resurfacing of the road. We can't wait to document the progress of the works and demonstrate that good well-balanced streets don't cause the sky to fall in.

2007 vs now.
Thanks to Google Maps, we can see how Victoria St, Seddon has evolved into a vibrant, welcoming street, all by adding trees, safer crossings, and prioritising people over cars and parking.

Tonight, Maribyrnong City Councillors are voting on similar improvements for Barkly St (Summerhill Rd to Geelong Rd). Following overwhelmingly positive public feedback, BikeWest urges all Councillors to vote YES and help make our streets safer and greener.

Labor's Katie Hall MP announced this week that if re-elected, the Carroll government will fund the design of safe bike lanes, better footpaths and street trees on Hopkins/Barkly, from the river to the Footscray C*D. 😍

It’s the first word from the Victorian Government on after a decade of BikeWest advocacy. Welcome news, but we’re cautiously optimistic. We’ve been here before. In 2019, Katie stood with then Shadow Transport Minister Anthony Albanese when he promised to build safe bike lanes from the river to West Footscray station on Napier/Buckley ( ). The Libs won that election, and the lanes never came. 💔

While design funding is good. Construction is better, and Maribyrnong Council can deliver some on Tuesday. Councillors vote on building safe bike lanes on Barkly St between Geelong and Summerhill Roads, plus safer crossings, level-boarding bus stops and many more street trees.

The support is there. More than 80% of YourCityYourVoice respondents back it. So do Victoria Walks, the PTUA and the West Footscray Traders Association.

BikeWest understands that the ALP Councillors may vote no.
We hope they’ll work with Katie Hall to give Barkly/Hopkins the footpaths, bike lanes and trees the inner west is asking for.

Closure of the Dixon Veloway this Wednesday evening.

We've heard rumours the rest of the veloway bumps will be fixed in the next couple of months. We assume if it was going to be this closure they'd have said though. Still here's hoping.

From 9:00 pm Wednesday 14 October to 5:00 am Thursday 15 October, maintenance crews will work along the Veloway, using equipment to inspect and clean the route.

Today marks the first anniversary of Will Richter's tragic and senseless death - killed on his bike on Macaulay Road Kensington.
Today also marks what would've been his 20th birthday.

On Thursday, will ride from the State Library to Melbourne University via Kensington in memory of him.
All are free to join us on the ride, whether you knew Will, or just want to lend your voice to the campaign for roads that are safe for everyone.

On 22 September 2025, Will Richter was riding his bike to the University of Melbourne via Macaulay Road Kensington when he was struck and killed by the driver of a truck. It was his 19th birthday.

This annual memorial ride is to send a clear message to road authorities - that people who ride bikes are deserving of a network of safe bike lanes - and are calling on authorities to make the necessary changes to our roads so that they are safe for all road users.

Ride with us on as we make our way to Kensington via West Melbourne. We will pause for a moment of reflection on Rankins Road, the site of Will’s tragic death.

From there we will complete Will’s trip to the University of Melbourne via Macaulay Road, Arden Street, Wreckyn Street and Grattan Street.
