🩰 Training Flexibility 101 | New blog article from Performance Medicine

Dancers often think flexibility is about stretching more - but real progress comes from training smarter, not harder.

In our latest blog article by Performance Medicine, Senior Physiotherapist Elissa Petesic, with Clinical Director Maria Anagnostou, break down how to build safe, sustainable flexibility through strength, control and body awareness.

Key tips include:
💪 Strength over length - strong muscles support safer movement and injury prevention
🧠 Know your body - flexibility is individual and shaped by your anatomy
⏱️ Timing matters - stretch after class or rehearsal, not before
🔁 Train end range strength - not just passive flexibility
⚖️ Stretch smart - more isn’t always better, and technique matters

Whether you're working towards greater range or refining control, understanding how your body responds to flexibility training is key to long-term performance and injury prevention.

✨ More highlights from our May Industry Day

A vibrant day of movement, ideas and industry connection.

Students and emerging dancers stepped into the studio to engage directly with professional artists, explore new approaches to training, and experience a snapshot of life in the dance sector today.

Across the day, participants took part in practical workshops, shared in group discussions, and had the chance to see how different skills and pathways come together in real-world dance practice.

There was a strong sense of energy and engagement throughout the day with dancers actively participating, collaborating, and challenging themselves in new ways.

We’re always inspired by the curiosity and commitment young dancers bring into these spaces ✨

✨ Highlights from our May Industry Day

What a fantastic day of discovery, curiosity and creative exploration!

Our May Industry Day brought together students and emerging dancers to dive into hands-on workshops, industry insights and open conversations about what it means to build a future in dance today.

From trying new approaches in the studio to hearing directly from working artists, it was a day full of practical learning, inspiration and connection across the sector.

We love seeing young dancers engaging so thoughtfully with their craft and beginning to map out their own pathways in the industry ✨

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for Dandy Dance over the past couple of weekends! 💃🕺

It was wonderful to see Harmony Square come alive with movement, music and connection as people of all ages stepped onto the dance floor and got involved.

From learning new moves to sharing a dance with friends, family and neighbours, the energy and enthusiasm you brought made each day truly special.

A big thank you to our artists, partners and supporters who helped make the event possible.
We can't wait to dance with you again soon! ✨

Don’t miss RED by Dancenorth at Rising Festival

Performing 3–7 June, RED is a powerful, unmissable contemporary work that places two bodies inside a large transparent inflatable dome.

As the air slowly disappears, so too does their space, forming a striking metaphor for a world under pressure and at its limits.

Epic, poetic and deeply intimate, RED reflects on how we adapt, survive, and remain human within systems facing ecological and social strain.

A modern parable for our times, this is contemporary dance at its most urgent and arresting.

Today is National Sorry Day. A day to remember and acknowledge the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were removed from their communities and families. Heading into Reconciliation Week, we stand in solidarity with those affected by the Stolen Generations and find the opportunity to reflect, learn & listen, and show our support to those around us and in our wider community.
