Miss Gay and Miss Tr*******al Australia International (formerly Miss Gay and Miss Tr*******al Australia) was founded in 2009 by Founder and President Gayzha Davao, who registered not-for-profit group Trans Angels Victoria Incorporated to run events to raise funds
for needy organisations in the LGBT and wider community. Ms Davao, a transgender businesswoman, and her partner Norbert Neugebauer operate Melbourne-based Bute Lighting, Australia’s first LGBT-run lighting business. Miss Gay and Miss Tr*******al Australia International serves as a platform for drag queen/female impersonator entertainers and transgender women in Australia. The pageant provides contestants with the opportunity to expand their intellect, talents and beauty. Contestants receive the exposure to better assist them in their goals and professional ambitions. They gain personal growth, networking opportunities and reach humanitarian targets. Staged annually in Melbourne since 2010, Miss Gay and Miss Tr*******al Australia International aims to raise awareness and promote equality for the LGBT and transgender community in society and the workplace. It operates on a model similar to a traditional beauty pageant for women except that every contestant must be born male. While Miss Gay Australia International contestants are men impersonating women (drag queen/female impersonators), Miss Tr*******al Australia International contestants showcase their outer and inner beauty as transgender women. Prizes are awarded to these two categories of contestants. Miss Gay and Miss Tr*******al Australia International attracts contestants from different parts of Australia and all walks of life. A major event of Melbourne’s Midsumma Festival. Contestants take part in community events in the lead up to and after the three-hour stage show, such as the Summer Night Market, Australia Day Parade and Midsumma Pride March. Since its launch, Miss Gay and Miss Tr*******al Australia International has grown from strength to strength as a result of the growing and ongoing support from volunteers, patrons, sponsors, other members of the community and from increasing media coverage in and outside Australia. The pageant has kick-started the careers of many winners and former contestants who have become trailblazers and leaders in such fields as entertainment, business, healthcare and professional services. Miss Gay and Miss Tr*******al Australia International is a registered trademark of Trans Angels Victoria Incorporated. All proceeds from the pageant are donated to the winners as cash prizes.
