On Friday 23rd of October, the ASRC is taking part in a forum called Strength in Solidarity: dialogues on anti-racism and Treaty in Dandenong, organised by Common Threads and Democracy in Colour.

This event is an opportunity to learn about Treaty in Victoria, and draw links between the anti-racist struggle of First Nations, migrant and refugee communities. Speakers will share stories of strength, and valuable insights on staying informed ahead of the state election to ensure that our communities are not divided by racist rhetoric.

We are deeply shocked and saddened by what has happened to Independent MP Helen Haines.

Helen has always been a friend of the ASRC and a strong supporter of refugees and people seeking asylum. We are thinking of her, her family, friends and colleagues at this incredibly difficult time and sending our heartfelt wishes for her recovery.

While the circumstances are still emerging, no one should have to experience violence or fear for their safety, especially while serving their community.

Seeking safety is a human right. So is being able to work, support your family and access care like Medicare while you wait for the outcome of your visa application.

This week, we were in Parliament with incredible advocates who have lived experience of seeking safety in Australia, and partners like RACS’ Sarah Dale, urging representatives to keep our migration system fair, free and safe.

Hearing our delegation speak directly to their own experiences, and explain the devastating impact of losing these essential rights, was so powerful. We know their words stayed with the people in the room, and we are so grateful for their bravery and willingness to join us on this important trip 💜

In a caring community, we look out for one another. Whoever we are, and wherever we came from, we all want to know there’s a foundation under us when times get tough.

But politicians have chosen to shut many of us who came here for safety out of that foundation, forcing people into poverty. It’s a decision governments made, and one they can change.

This Anti-Poverty Week, we’re calling for a fair and equal foundation for everyone, with the support people seeking asylum need to rebuild their lives as part of our community.

We spent the last 48 hours in Canberra, side by side with refugees, making the case for protecting refugee rights ✊

These last two days in Canberra have been huge. We’ve been meeting with politicians from across Parliament, pushing back against harmful refugee policies and making sure those directly impacted are part of the conversation.
