For many people affected by cancer, looking after your heart health can be an important part of treatment and recovery.

This interesting Q&A from The Wesley Hospital explores the growing field of cardio-oncology and why it matters for some cancer patients and survivors.

Read more below. πŸ‘‡

Cardio-oncology is a growing specialty dedicated to supporting patients and their heart health before, during and after cancer treatment into survivorship πŸ’œ

It’s a specialty you may not have heard of before that sits at the intersection of cardiac and cancer care.

The Wesley’s Dr Jonathan Sen is one of only a handful of specialists in the field here in Queensland. In our latest Q & A, he explains what cardio-oncology is and why protecting and managing heart health can be an important part of a cancer journey.

🌿 New at Choices: Tai Chi/Qigong and Breathwork

Choices Cancer Support Centre has introduced two new programs designed to support calm, connection and wellbeing during and after cancer treatment.

🌬️ Breathwork uses simple, intentional breathing techniques to support relaxation, emotional wellbeing and stress management – providing practical tools you can use whenever you need to slow down, ground yourself or navigate challenging moments.

πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ Tai Chi/Qigong combines energy cultivation, relaxation, mindful movement, meditation, breathwork and embodied self-awareness, helping to calm the mind, gently move the body and nourish the soul. Sessions can be adapted to individual needs and can be practised seated or standing.

Both programs are available online and face-to-face, with sessions free for people affected by cancer, regardless of where they received their diagnosis or treatment.

πŸ“… Breathwork: Wednesdays, 11.45am-12.30pm, following yoga
πŸ“… Tai Chi/Qigong: Thursdays, 10-11am

These programs can be joined at any time but they do run in blocks with breaks in between. Please check the Choices Calendar for dates: https://bit.ly/4wwkD9i

A special thank you to the Choices Sisters and Friends Craft Group, who recently welcomed Ashley from The Wesley Hospital's MB1 ward.

Ashley shared how much patients appreciate the group's handmade fiddle mats, textured gloves, beanies and quilts, with many finding them comforting during times of anxiety or loneliness. The visit also sparked new ideas for how the group can continue supporting patients into the future.

We're grateful for the compassion, creativity and dedication of our volunteers, whose work makes a meaningful difference every day. πŸ’œ

A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful community at Albert Street Uniting Church for including us in their recent Christmas in July celebrations.

We were delighted to be part of such a special evening, with the Choices Mini Christmas Market helping raise funds to support people affected by cancer.

A special thank you also goes to our talented Choices Sisters & Friends Craft Group, whose beautiful handmade creations were the highlight of the market and raised more than $500 for Choices.

We are also deeply grateful to everyone who attended, purchased gifts, sang along to the carols and helped make the event such a success. ❀️
