“Hope you get well soon. Sending you lots of hugs.” 🤍

This heartwarming note from little Olivia and Annabel was left on the Tree of Hope and Gratitude at Toowong Village last year – a reminder that even the smallest messages can carry a great deal of comfort.

Thank you Olivia and Annabel. 💜

National Reconciliation Week (27 May-3 June) invites all of us to reflect on our shared histories and consider the role we each play in shaping a more inclusive future.

This year’s theme, ‘All In’ is a simple but powerful reminder: reconciliation happens in the everyday. It’s in the conversations we have, the curiosity we bring and the actions we choose to take.

For those wondering where to start, being ‘All In’ doesn’t have to mean big gestures. It can look like taking time to learn whose Country you’re on, listening to First Nations voices and experiences, supporting First Nations businesses, or challenging your own assumptions.

At UnitingCare, this work is part of who we are. Our Reconciliation Action Plan helps guide how we build stronger relationships, create culturally safe environments and continue learning as an organisation. (You can read it here: https://myuniting.care/4tCGpXt.)

We know there’s always more to do. And NRW is a moment to pause and reflect, but also to ask: what’s one thing I can do differently this week - and keep doing beyond it?

The Wesley Hospital is proudly part of UnitingCare.

💜 Care in every stitch 💜

Our wonderful Choices Sisters & Friends Craft Group has been hard at work, creating handmade drain bags for the Breast Care Nurses at The Wesley Hospital.

After hearing there was a shortage, the group quickly swung into action - cutting, sewing and delivering a beautiful batch of drain bags to support patients following breast surgery. It was a special moment to connect the craft group with the Breast Care Nursing team, who will be sharing these thoughtful creations with patients when they need them most.

These small, practical items make a big difference, offering comfort, dignity and care during recovery.

🧵 Want to help? Donations of clean cotton fabric are always appreciated for projects like these.
🧵 Join us! The Craft Group meets on the second Saturday of each month at Choices - we’d love to welcome new faces and helping hands.

⭐ Happy National Volunteer Week! ⭐

This year’s theme is Your Year to Volunteer, honouring the contribution of volunteers and inviting people to make 2026 a year of meaningful involvement. In recognition of the theme, we asked Choices volunteers Marilyn (left) and Suzanne (right) to reflect on their year to volunteer and what made them take the plunge.

Suzanne's year to volunteer was 2003. She wanted to give back after attending some exercise programs the previous year while undergoing radiation therapy. She also appreciated the help, information and listening ear she found at Choices.

"Being a volunteer is very satisfying - talking to people coming through on their journey and then joining in on all the help and programs Choices offers," she said. "Hopefully I will be able to continue for a while longer, with 25 years coming up next year!"

Marilyn, whose year to volunteer was 2016, also wanted to give back. Her favourite part of volunteering? "I love the people who come to Choices."

We are very grateful to all our volunteers: Suzanne, Marilyn, Sandra, Sylvia, Val and Karen. Thank you so much for helping to change lives, yours included. 💜

All our volunteers have lived experience of cancer – if you would like to volunteer for Choices, please call 07 3232 6548

Today, we celebrate International Nurses Day, and those special people whose compassion, skill and dedication make a meaningful difference to patients and families every single day.

We are especially grateful for Choices’ incredible nurses Lauren and Siobhan, whose care extends far beyond the clinical. Their empathy, reassurance and unwavering support help guide people through some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

We also recognise Janine, formerly Clinical Nurse Manager at Choices and now a Senior Research Fellow at Flinders University, whose expertise continues to support our patients through ongoing referral and collaboration.

Thank you, Lauren, Siobhan and Janine — and thank you to every nurse we are privileged to work alongside. We are so proud to be part of this caring community.
