SPAN is excited to have been nominated for a Neighbourhood Houses Victoria award for community resilience for our Clyde Street Christmas Party held last year.

While a street party might seem like a bit of fluff and fun, connected communities do better when times get tough.

Thank you to Darebin City Council for continuing to invest in our community's social infrastructure, and to Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Our Lady 'Axion Estin', 5th Brunswick Scouts, Community Bank Clifton Hill-North Fitzroy, and SecondBite for helping make the day so special 💛

We're so pleased to be collaborating with The Up Community with their latest collections... The Up Community diverts masses of things from landfill. One person's trash is another person's treasure...

A gentle request for Halloween week: please skip the fake spider web.

Parents mistake that stretchy webbing for the real stuff and carry it back to the nest. It doesn’t break like natural silk, so baby birds get tangled around their necks, legs and wings, and chicks can be left with deformed limbs or not survive.

Our birds are already under enormous pressure from bird flu and habitat loss. This is one danger we can easily remove.

Spooky alternatives that are bird safe: paper or card webs, black yarn taken down after the night, chalk webs on the pavement, pumpkins, paper bats and lights.

If you already have webbing up, please take it down and bin it, and check nearby trees and shrubs for stray bits. Please share with your neighbours too. Small changes on our street make a real difference to the birds that live alongside us.

Making waves for a swimmable Birrarung 🏊

This week, we joined Melbourne Water, Yarra City Council, Moonee Valley City Council and Banyule City Council to launch the Coalition for a Swimmable Birrarung.

From improving water quality to reconnecting people with the river, the Coalition is working towards a future where taking a dip in the Birrarung is part of Melbourne life once again.

Backed by the global Swimmable Cities movement and hundreds of organisations around the world, the current is flowing in the right direction towards a cleaner, healthier and more connected Birrarung 🌊

Today at Good Bugs, Kaye from Hearing Australia gave many of our gardeners a free hearing check.

Hearing changes can be gradual, so it’s easy not to notice them until conversations get harder. Muffled sounds, ringing, or struggling to follow a chat in a noisy room are all good reasons to get checked. Catching things early means more options, and it helps us stay connected to the people around us.

Hearing Australia offers free 15-minute adult hearing checks. Find your closest centre at hearing.com.au or call 134 432.

Thank you Kaye, and thank you to everyone who came along.

Communities have got this.

Right now, ordinary people are doing the work that needs doing. We are planting raingardens, restoring land, cleaning up our creeks and rivers, bringing back wildlife corridors, growing food, sharing what we have, and marching for Palestine and against genocide. We are looking after each other.

Which of these have you done lately? Or what else have you been doing in your community?

Tell us in the comments. Every bit counts, big or small.
