Community Engagement - Local First Responder Network (Shellharbour)

Marine Rescue Shellharbour recently engaged with members of the local Fire and Rescue NSW and Surf Life Saving NSW. The regular coffee catch-up is sponsored by Fortem Australia, a national not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the mental health, wellbeing and resilience of first responders and their families.

This opportunity allows cross-agency cooperation and dialogue on a range of topics including welfare support and inter-agency response to emergencies outside the hustle and bustle of emergency response operations.

The emergency service crews took the opportunity to discuss local rescue capabilities around Shellharbour, response protocols, and shared operational challenges. A key highlight of the visit was a tour and briefing on the technical specifications and launch readiness of the Shellharbour rescue vessel (SH30).

By understanding each agency's specific equipment and procedures, all teams are better equipped to deliver fast, coordinated responses during coastal emergencies. This successful visit reinforces the strong relationship between local emergency services, all working together to keep the Shellharbour community safe on and off the water.

Local Heroes Share Vital Water Safety Message with Gerringong Rotary

Marine Rescue Shellharbour Deputy Unit Commander Geoff Troth and volunteer member Eva Goodchild recently took centre stage as guest speakers at a Gerringong Sunrise Rotary meeting.

Addressing a captivated room of local Rotarians at the Gerringong Town Hall, the seasoned emergency service personnel shared powerful insights into the round-the-clock search and rescue operations safeguarding the Illawarra.

With extensive operational service under his belt, Geoff Troth—a qualified boat skipper and rescue trainer, brought maritime expertise to the discussion. Alongside Eva Goodchild, an active crew member of the Marine Rescue Shellharbour unit who regularly trains aboard the unit's vessel, the pair discussed what it takes to protect local waterways.

The presentation outlined the significant responsibilities handled by the unit's volunteer roster. They highlighted the capabilities of their primary rescue vessel, Shellharbour 30 (SH30), and detailed the taxing nature of local missions, which span everything from navigating complex coastal conditions to towing stranded watercraft back to safety.

Heading into the busy boating season, Marine Rescue NSW urges all local boaties to adopt three vital habits before launching:

The "Log On" System: Informing shore-based radio operators of your voyage details via VHF Channel 16 or the free Marine Rescue NSW App so help can be deployed immediately if you fail to return.

Lifejacket Vigilance: Ensuring lifejackets are modern, serviced, and worn correctly by everyone on board.

Fuel Management: Strictly adhering to the "rule of thirds"—one third for the journey out, one third for the return, and one third held in reserve.

The presentation highlighted the natural synergy between Rotary’s motto of "Service Above Self" and the unwavering commitment of Marine Rescue volunteers.

Gerringong Sunrise Rotary members extended a warm thanks to Geoff Troth and Eva Goodchild for their time, acknowledging the critical, life-saving vigils they keep so families can enjoy the South Coast safely.

Crossing the Bar - Our departed colleague Joe Vasconcelos

In maritime culture—including organisations like Marine Rescue NSW—the phrase "Crossing the Bar" is a deeply respected term. It serves as a traditional metaphor for a mariner who has passed away, inspired by Alfred, Lord Tennyson's famous poem Crossing the Bar.

When a volunteer or marine official passes away, units often hold a memorial ceremony where they pay tribute to the member who has "crossed the bar" for the final time.

Marine Rescue Shellharbour was honoured on the weekend to recognise Joe Vasconcelos' lengthy and exemplary service with Marine Rescue Shellharbour.
