Women's Trauma Recovery Centre

Women's Trauma Recovery Centre The Illawarra Women’s Trauma Recovery Centre is a place for women to heal and rebuild lives after experiencing domestic, family, and sexual violence.

An Australian-first community-led initiative, the Illawarra Women’s Trauma Recovery Centre will be an integrated, specialist, and dedicated service currently in early stages of development and establishment. The Centre will offer individual support to women, that holistically, comprehensively, and personally address the impacts of domestic, family, and sexual violence for each woman. The Centre will open its services in 2024.

Amazing Murruwarri artist, Dr Virginia Keft Artist, joined us at the Centre during National Reconciliation Week to teach traditional basket weaving.
It was a beautiful session that brought women together to connect, learn, and share stories while taking part in this mindful and meaningful cultural activity.

Often, the most important conversations happen when people slow down and truly listen.
Staff at the Illawarra Women’s Trauma Recovery Centre are taking part in regular Yarning Circles, a culturally significant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander practice centred on listening, sharing and learning together.
Facilitated by Culture Across Time, the sessions are helping create deeper connections and understanding among staff, while creating space for more open and meaningful conversations.

Have you tried our trauma-sensitive Yoga classes yet?

These free weekly sessions will run every Friday at our Centre in Shellharbour from 1pm to 2pm.

We’ve partnered with the Yoga Foundation, which delivers specialised yoga programs to people impacted by mental health issues, trauma and adversity.

The classes aim to provide women with a safe and supportive space on their healing journey. Research shows that yoga can help those affected by trauma regain a sense of control and can lead to better decision-making.

No prior yoga experience is needed, and modifications will be available for all bodies and abilities. Mats and equipment are provided, and participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing.

Contact us to find out more on 4243 9800.

Please note: Available to women currently receiving support through the Centre. Contact us for information on how to refer and wait times.

Today, we gathered to connect and reflect on National Sorry Day, marking the start of National Reconciliation Week.
It was a meaningful opportunity to listen, share stories, and honour the strength, resilience, and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
On this day, it is important to learn about our shared history, the National Apology, and the Stolen Generations through engagement, listening, and understanding. National Sorry Day is also a time to acknowledge the strength and resilience of Stolen Generations Survivors and reflect on how we can all contribute to healing and reconciliation.
Reconciliation Week reminds us that reconciliation is not a single moment, but an ongoing journey, grounded in truth-telling, respect, and meaningful action. Together, we continue to walk toward a more inclusive and compassionate future.
Thank you to everyone who joined us. May we continue to listen deeply, learn openly, and stand together in the spirit of reconciliation, healing, and hope.

Members of the Illawarra Women’s Trauma Recovery Centre team travelled to Kiama this week to meet with members of the NSW Cabinet and highlight the critical importance of recovery and healing for women who have experienced domestic, family and sexual violence.

Our CEO, Elise Phillips, spoke about the need for continued investment in long-term healing and recovery programs for women in the Illawarra, alongside increased funding for frontline domestic violence services that support women and families every day.
