Big day for the Lake George Communications Brigade!

Today brigade members Mac and Tyler completed stage one of an upgrade to our Operational Command Vehicle (OCV), installing a new workstation inside the vehicle. This gives us the ability to input live data and build mapping on the spot, editing and displaying it in real time to strengthen two way situational awareness.

So what does that actually mean on the ground? An OCV is more than a vehicle. It brings skilled communicators right to the field, close to where decisions are being made. That is a genuine force multiplier. Our crews help push the situational awareness picture out to the field, and just as importantly, pull information back from the field into the wider incident picture. Better information, shared faster, helps everyone operate more safely and effectively.

What makes this one special is that the work has been done by our own brigade members, using our own brigade funds. This is your local volunteers rolling up their sleeves and building capability with the resources we have.

Stage one is done, and there is plenty more we would love to do. Further upgrades will happen as funds allow, with the resources we have. As a volunteer brigade, that support always makes a difference to what we can bring to the community.

Big day for Lake George Communications Brigade! 📻

A number of our members are undertaking their Communications Centre Assistant (CCA) assessments today, the first formal step in their comms career with the brigade.

This is where the training and preparation starts to come together. CCA is the foundation qualification that opens the door to operational comms work, and it takes real commitment to get to assessment day.

We wish our members all the best today and look forward to welcoming them into operations soon.

Another solid training night at Lake George Communications Brigade! 📻

This week’s session had two key focuses. SDC Nicki led the group through role clarity for when we’re operating as a comms cell, exactly how we function each weekend throughout fire season. Understanding who does what, and when, is what keeps our dispatch and radio operations running smoothly under pressure.

DC Adam then took the team through radio simulation practice, giving members hands on time to build confidence and sharpen their skills on air.

Sessions like this are what keep our brigade ready to support the district when it counts. Thanks to Nicki and Adam for leading the training, and to everyone who came along to learn and practise.

🚒📻 Brigade Training: Mental Health First Aid & Stress Inoculation 🧠

Recently our members had the opportunity to spend a training session with Amelia from RFS Psychological Services.

Our brigade’s work is a little different to a standard fireground crew. We’re often the calm, steady voice on the radio, coordinating dispatch and providing assessment support during high pressure incidents. That unique role comes with its own mental load, and Amelia’s session gave our members practical tools to recognise and manage it.

The session covered mental health first aid principles and stress inoculation techniques, giving our team real strategies to look after themselves and each other, both on the radio and off it.

A huge thank you to Amelia for such an engaging and genuinely useful session. Investing in our people is just as important as investing in our equipment, and days like this remind us why.

Our crew spent the weekend supporting the Crew Leader (Village) course, working out of our Operational Command Vehicle (OCV) to provide dispatch and assessment support for nearly a dozen candidates.

It’s a role our team genuinely loves. Communications is often behind the scenes, but it plays a huge part in how these courses run smoothly and safely. Great to see the candidates put in the hard work across the weekend, and a big thankyou to the instructors for another well run course.

Well done to everyone involved, and thanks as always for the opportunity to support training like this.

🚨 Deputy Captain Adam and member Dan visited our friends at Burra Rural Fire Brigade this week to talk all about communications. The Communications Brigade often visits other firefighting brigades within the district for joint training opportunities and spread the word on communications.

🚒 Our members took the Operational Command Vehicle (OCV) for the evening to explain its capabilities and how Communications members can support field operations.

🎓 We were particularly excited to have four students from the Australian National University (ANU) attend the evening. The four talented students are participating this year in a project looking at multi-hazard monitoring in rural areas using sensors. It was an interesting 2-way conversation on their project and how we can assist them in advising the type of data the RFS is interested in. We wish them all the best with the presentation of their project in the coming months.

🚒 Lake George Communications Brigade | Annual General Meeting 2026

Over the weekend, Lake George Communications Brigade held its Annual General Meeting and elected the leadership team that will carry the brigade through the year ahead.

We are pleased to announce the following office bearers:

Administration: President: Jenny, Secretary: Kat, Treasurer: Cate, Training Officer: Helen, Assistant Training Officer and Equipment Officer: Mac

Congratulations to everyone elected, and a sincere thank you to all members who continue to give their time and expertise to support our community.

This is a brigade with genuine momentum. A growing membership, a strong operational reputation, and a year ahead that includes some significant milestones for our members and our district. We are looking forward to it.

🔥 Off-Season Training Underway!

Last night the Lake George Communications Brigade kicked off its off-season training program, and what a great start it was! 👏

Our session focused on communications considerations for escalating fire scenarios, using the district’s purpose-built tarp as our training tool. This impressive tarp, handcrafted by brigade members from across the district, mirrors the terrain and features available in our online mapping system FireMapper, bringing the digital map to life right in front of us. 🗺️

Members worked through how communications needs and challenges evolve as a fire scenario develops and escalates, generating some excellent discussions along the way. 💬

A huge thanks to everyone who contributed to building the tarp and to all members who turned out for the session. This is exactly the kind of preparation that keeps our brigade ready when it counts. 💪

🚒 Honouring Our Own this St Florian’s Day

Today, May 4th, we observe St Florian’s Day, the feast day of the patron saint of firefighters. It is a significant day for the NSW Rural Fire Service, where we pause to reflect on the commitment, spirit, and sacrifices made by volunteers across the state.

At Lake George Communications Brigade, our work often happens behind the scenes and over the airwaves, but our connection to the frontline is absolute.

Today, we take a moment to:
• Remember: We pause to honour the memory of those members who are no longer with us.

• Celebrate: A massive congratulations to all RFS members being recognised with awards and commendations today.

To all our fellow firefighters—whether you’re responding to a call, coordinating a radio network, or supporting the fleet—thank you for your selfless contribution.

🔥 And that’s a wrap on the 2025/2026 bushfire season!

To every volunteer who gave up weekends, sleep, and time with family to staff radios, coordinate comms, and support crews on the ground: thank you. You are the reason it works. 🙏

The cooler months are a great time to train, maintain equipment, and get ready for next season.

Stay safe out there and enjoy the break. We will be ready again when the time comes.
