Winter’s chill could not keep our Red & Yellow flags from stealing the spotlight in a vibrant, unforgettable performance.
The students and staff at Greensborough’s Apollo Parkways Primary School delivered an outstanding performance this month at Wakakirri, Australia’s largest performing arts event.
With a joyful celebration of beach safety, community spirit and Australia’s volunteer lifesavers, the production transformed the iconic Red & Yellow flags into living symbols through dance, storytelling and bursts of creativity.
The experience reached far beyond the stage, inspiring audiences to grasp the true importance of swimming between the flags and honouring the lifesavers who watch over our beaches. It sparked a deeper appreciation among students for water safety and the vital role volunteers play in safeguarding our communities.
One student shared:
“Even just wearing red and yellow for 7 minutes made me feel extremely proud and just Australian. ‘Swim between the flags’ has so much more meaning now that I’ve been in a lifesaver’s shoes. Every lifesaver is a hero even if they don’t wear capes.”
It is inspiring to witness schools breathe life into water safety education, helping students and audiences truly understand why swimming between the flags matters and shining a light on the lifesavers who protect our shores.
