National Carers Week | 11–17 October

This National Carers Week, we recognise the more than three million Australians who provide unpaid care and support to a family member or friend. The 2026 theme, “Care for a carer: Making carers visible,” reminds us to recognise carers, listen to their experiences and support their wellbeing.

At Catholic Homes, carers are valued partners in the care we provide. Their knowledge, commitment and understanding help us support each person as an individual.

We also acknowledge the many people in our workforce and broader community who balance caring responsibilities with other parts of their lives.

To every carer: thank you. Your care, strength and contribution are seen and deeply appreciated.

Bubble-wrap blooms at Ocean Star! Ocean Star residents recently experimented with paint and bubble wrap to create beautiful hydrangeas on canvas.

There was a little apprehension at first, but once residents saw how effectively the bubble wrap created the shape and texture of the flowers, everyone was keen to give it a try.

The finished canvases were colourful, creative and completely unique. We think they turned out beautifully—and we’re sure you’ll agree!

Celebrating three wonderful mums-to-be at Ocean Star 🍼

Residents and employees recently came together for a special baby shower celebrating Hayley, Karma and Bhagu.

The afternoon included plenty of fun predictions. Guests guessed the gender and birth weight of two of the babies, while predictions for Hayley’s baby included the name and weight.

Residents thoroughly enjoyed joining the celebration, sharing their well wishes and offering plenty of advice to the three mums-to-be.

It was a lovely afternoon filled with laughter, conversation and excitement for the new arrivals. We wish Hayley, Karma and Bhagu all the very best for the journey ahead!

Residents have been enjoying a rewarding journey from garden to gift, harvesting lavender grown in the St Vincent’s garden, carefully drying the blooms and filling individual pouches to create beautifully fragrant sachets.

The activity provided a lovely opportunity to connect with nature, be creative and work together towards a shared purpose.

Residents proudly prepared the handmade gifts to share with their families and loved ones at the upcoming Spring Garden Gala Event—showcasing their efforts and sharing the calming fragrance of lavender with those who matter most.

A recipe worth sharing at Ocean Star 🫐🍋

Ocean Star residents recently put their baking skills to the test by working with filo pastry, and it certainly presented a challenge!

With plenty of patience and perseverance, they created delicious blueberry and lemon cheesecakes that were enjoyed by everyone. Some were even delivered to the nurses’ station so employees could share in the tasting.

The cheesecakes were such a success that several copies of the recipe had to be printed for residents and employees eager to share it and try making them at home.

When everyone asks for the recipe, you know the baking has been a success!

St Vincent’s residents recently enjoyed a trip to Bunnings to choose plants and pots for their upcoming gardening activities.

There were plenty of smiles and great conversations as residents explored the different options, shared their ideas and planned what they would like to grow in the St Vincent’s garden.

Now comes the exciting part, planting their selections and watching the garden take shape!

**A look back at Father’s Day at Ocean Star 🤠**

Ocean Star celebrated Father’s Day with a cowboy-themed afternoon in the Wellness Lounge.

The men chose the movie for the afternoon, and it came as no surprise when a Clint Eastwood classic won the vote! They enjoyed finger food while watching the film and posing for photos with their “Wanted” signs.

A cowboy name game, based on each person’s initials and birth month, created plenty of laughter, producing names including “Mad-Dog Tumbleweed”, “Biscuits Spur Spikes”, “Buck Barnes” and “Buckaroo Lonestar”.

There were more chuckles when the b**r bucket was named the “watering hole”, although the men suggested “the drinking trough” might have been even better!

The celebration continued on Sunday, with the dining room tables decorated in blue to help make the day special for all the fathers and father figures at Ocean Star.

A sweet birthday surprise for Ann 🎂 Ocean Star resident Ann recently celebrated her birthday surrounded by friends and plenty of delicious cake.

When the birthday cakes were brought to her table, Ann thought they were all for her and exclaimed that she couldn’t possibly eat that much ice cream!

She was relieved to discover there was plenty to share, creating a lovely moment of laughter around the table.

Happy birthday, Ann! We hope you enjoyed your special day. 💐
