Based in Perth, Western Australia, ASeTTS provides support to refugees and people from a refugee background.

ASeTTS is a non profit, non government organisation which provides treatment and support to people who have been tortured or traumatised by violent conflicts. Many of our clients are recent arrivals to Australia, although our services are available to all survivors whatever the length of their residence has been in Australia.

Yesterday was International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia and today our staff came together to acknowledge the day with an afternoon tea, and we joined in on an online quiz exploring facts about LGTBIQA+refugees and asylum seekers.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms that everyone has the right to live free from persecution, to seek asylum, and to be treated with dignity. Yet for many LGBTIQA+ people, these rights are denied long before they reach safety. Forcibly displaced LGBTIQA+ people face significant challenges that create complex intersections between their sexual or gender identity, their religious and cultural belonging, their reasons for persecution and their perception of safety. At the recent FASSTT Conference, our CEO Liza Beinart chaired the plenary session on LGBTIQA+ Refugees in Transit, featuring Dr Victor Madrigal‑Borloz and Renee Dixson. Together, they explored how LGBTIQA+ refugees are persecuted not only for who they are, but for who they love and the urgent need for safety, dignity, and protection throughout their journeys.

At ASeTTS, we are committed to being a safe, inclusive space where LGBTIQA+ refugees and asylum seekers can access trauma-informed mental health support that upholds these fundamental rights every day.

Our team is back and reflecting on their time at last week's 4th Australia and New Zealand Refugee Trauma Recovery in Resettlement Conference in Sydney.

The team returned feeling energised, inspired, and deeply connected to the broader sector. We’re proud to have contributed to the program through staff presentations who for many it was their first time presenting at a conference.

Our team presented on:
Shirin - Building Resilience through Co-Designed, Trauma-Informed Care with Palestinian Community of Western Australia: An evidence-informed, community-led model for trauma recovery and collective resilience
Salah - Cook Like a Chef: A Cooking Group Intervention for Improving Mental Wellbeing and Social Connection Among Men from Refugee Backgrounds.
David - Strengthening Refugee Leadership through Trauma-Informed Practice
Naina and Sheena - Connected but Alone: The Paradox of Technology and Mental Wellbeing in CaLD communities as a focus on refugee and asylum seekers
Eloise and Sarah - The Peer Mentors Program: Lived Experience as Leadership and Know Your Rights: Empowering Youth through building resilience, inclusion, and leadership
Liza Beinart and former ASeTTS Community Development Project Officer Paola - Co-designing resilience: The first community-informed project tailored for Latin American refugees in Australia

And Liza Beinart chaired the plenary session on LGBTIQA+ Refugees in Transit featuring Dr Renee Dixson and Victor Madrigal-Borloz.

On Saturday 2nd of May, we held in partnership with the Congolese Community Western Australia, a session on cervical cancer screening awareness.

The session was part of ASeTTS' Congolese Community Project. Participants were provided with information on what cervical cancer is, why screening is important, how the test works, self‑collection options and where to get screened. It was an informative session with the participants asking great questions.

The session was followed by a lunch to share in conversation🌻

Men have completed the final session of the Build Together program at Fremantle Men's Community Shed.

Over the course of the program, participants developed practical woodworking skills while working alongside others in a structured and supportive environment.

Their completed projects included chopping & cheese boards, stools, and guitars to take home, along with two tables and a bench seat generously created for ASeTTs.

The final session marked a graduation celebration, recognising the commitment, effort, and progress of each participant throughout the program.

The group concluded the day with a shared lunch of traditional fish and chips by the Fremantle shoreline, reflecting on their achievements and time together.

We are excited to announce that after a comprehensive search, we have a new Consultant Psychiatrist!

Dr Meta Schenk has joined the ASeTTS team, providing psychiatry services to our clients with complex needs and clinical supervision to our counselling team. She is highly engaged and experienced, with a strong interest in psychotherapy and supervision.

Dr Schenk brings a wealth of knowledge, expertise and warmth to our service, and having been supervised by our recently-retired Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Sue Lutton she qualified in Psychiatry, Dr Schenk already has a strong understanding of our service context. We are so grateful to Dr Lutton for her perseverance in securing us this wonderful new psychiatrist to continue her legacy at ASeTTS.

ASeTTS is pleased to share that 11 of ASeTTS team members will attend The Forum of Australian Services for Survivors of Torture and Trauma (FASSTT) Conference in Sydney, 4–6 May 2026, addressing refugee trauma recovery in resettlement.

The bi‑national conference brings together practitioners, researchers, community leaders and government stakeholders from Australia, New Zealand and beyond to share practice, policy, research and lived experience.

ASeTTS looks forward to presenting, learning and building connections to bring back insights that better support the communities we serve.

Yesterday the participants from the MEN4Men group (Meaningful Engagement and Networking for Men) enjoyed an outing to play billiards and snooker as part of their social circle, strengthening friendships and building social connections in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.
