Recently we welcomed a group of final year students and early career OTs into the Solutions Centre for a conversation about what happens beyond graduation…
Importantly, this wasn’t a recruitment event.
We wanted to create something that gave graduates useful information, different perspectives and practical tools to help them navigate the transition into practice - to understand what to look for in an employer, ask better questions, build confidence, recognise the opportunities around them and ultimately find the environment that is the right fit for them.
A huge thank you to Chris Antaris, Felicity Beaulieu, Chris Pearce, and Lauren Hart for giving their time so generously and bringing very different perspectives to the conversation. Recruitment, leadership, clinical practice, education, mentoring and business - there was a lot of experience in the room, but also a willingness to talk candidly about the things we often only learn after graduating.
One of the messages we hope people left with was that there isn’t one ‘right’ way to start an OT career, and your first job certainly doesn’t need to define the rest of it.
If everyone walked away a little more confident and have a few more people in the profession they now feel comfortable reaching out to, I think we achieved what we set out to do.
The transition beyond graduation can feel big. It gets a little easier when you know who to ask.
BIG thanks to everyone who came along and made the room what it was 🤗
