Street Libraries are beautiful homes for books, planted in your front yard. Invite a neighbour to share the joys of reading today!

Street Libraries are beautiful home for books, planted in your (or your neighbour’s) front yard. They are accessible from the street, and are an invitation to share the joy of reading. Street Libraries are a window into the mind of the neighbourhood; books come and go; no-one needs to check them in or out. People can simply reach in and take what interests them; when they are done, they can return them to the Street Library network, or pass them on to friends. If anyone has a book or two that they think others would enjoy, they can just pop it into any Street Library they happen to be walking past. They are a symbol of trust and hope – a tiny vestibule of literary happiness.

We were so excited to discover the first application for Meet Your Street in the SLA inbox this morning!

We have an eye on the future and growing the next generation of Street Librarians; to that end we’re offering 20 grants of $100 to mini-Street Librarians (and their supportive guardians). The money is to be used to assist with celebrating Street Libraries and making community connections IRL!

What does that look like? It’s simply any action or activity that gets people visiting Street Libraries and talking to each other during National Street Library Week, this November 21-29, 2026.

It might be:

- A morning tea or afternoon drinks on the footpath with book swapping

- A story time session for the small folk, or an author or librarian (or anyone!)

- A book swap with a theme (spooky stories, picture books, junior fiction, adventure novels)

- A working bee to repaint or restock Street Libraries; get the neighbours involved and interested in your library

The $100 is to spend on preparing for the activity: food, chalk, red cordial, printing, a small thank-you for someone who comes along to read. It’s up to your young person!

School's back, but there's a long summer holiday on the horizon! For those needing a wholesome school holiday project might we suggest that starting a Street Library is a legitimate and productive use of a young person’s time?

A young person can run a Street Library as well as any adult - restocking, weatherproofing, collecting donations and curating. Young folks know what stories are of interest to their peers and can source books via their school and social circles to provide a quality selection for other young readers to choose from.

Check out some of the latest work being done by these young Street Librarians.

Excellent news for those who reside and/or work in the City of Brimbank: Street Library Australia has teamed up with Brimbank City Council and are very excited to extend an invitation to residents of the area to join the Brimbank Street Library Program.

We’re seeking expressions of interest from individuals, businesses and community-minded organisations in the municipality who are keen to host a publicly accessible Street Library on their property.

The Warrnambool LGA is one Street Library richer thanks to West Warrnambool Neighbourhood House (WWNH) and its community.

Earlier this year WWNH canvassed their nearby residents to gauge the level of support for placing a Street Library adjacent to their centre and within the local green space of Pecten Park. Thanks to overwhelming support from folks in the area the City of Warrnambool granted permission for WWNH to proceed with their idea.

Fast forward a few months, and Pecten Park is now home to a beautifully painted Street Library by the hand of First Nations artist, Bec Clayton.

“The WWNH sign reads 'Connect, Collaborate, Community',” says local councillor Vicki Jellie, speaking of the centre's ongoing programs and initiatives, "and that's what this Street Library is all about."

Excellent outreach, excellent result.

What started as a simple Street Library has expanded into a community hub for the residents of Scullin, ACT, with the newly-registered Adair Street Community Hub.

The special hub includes a library with kids and adult sections, a puzzle library, bottle & jar swap, treasures, plants… when a community unites the list goes on and on!

Adair locals encourage the community to share widely and reduce waste. We encourage you to visit this wonderful community resource.

The tale of the Ninth Avenue Book Nook in Railway Estate, QLD, is one of appreciation, community, kindness, patience, and resilience.

Our hero’s journey began in June, 2025, with the receipt of a message via the Street Library Australia website from Railway Estate local, Cynthia.

"Hi Street Library Australia. I hope you are well. I'm writing to you regarding a special Street Library on my street. The librarian, Diana, is an active and beloved member of our community.

On Sunday, a stolen ute towing a boat crashed through the power pole, front fence, and driveway gate of her home in the early hours of the morning. I saw the damage while driving past her house during my son's kindy drop-off and noticed her letter box and Street Library were no longer there. I didn't ask Diana outright, but I'm guessing they were damaged, too..."

This one is for Trevor, for whom this Street Library is named.

The Trevor Muntz Memorial Library, in Narre Warren, VIC, was founded by his family to honour their father; a proud bookshop owner and lifelong reader who shared his love of reading with the community every single day.

The plan for this Street Library is to continue sharing Trevor's love of a good book and bringing people together. What a beautiful tribute.

*Join Explore & Develop Conder, as they explore new worlds and develop reading skills with their Little School on the Land Library.

The educators and children at this early learning centre in the ACT can’t wait for you to see their new Street Library; a collaborative effort enjoyed by all involved.

Each room put forward their favourite book for incorporation into the artwork, many of which were created by the children themselves. Birds, bugs and wombats… they’re all here!

A very talented educator also added beautiful indigenous artwork representing wetlands and community to acknowledge the importance of caring for country and the connections shared with the land and each other.

It’s a truly beautiful piece of work. Congrats, E&D Conder. We know you will enjoy sharing your favourite books with your community!

Hello Little Green Library - welcome to the map!

Located in Nathan, QLD, the Little Green Library promises to be an excellent and interesting source of literature - just be sure to give a book when you can, or return what you have borrowed.

“Grab a book and take a stroll through Toohey Forest,” invites Street Librarian Sophia. “Find a bench between the trees for a good read!”

An excellent idea, and another generous Street Librarian to be grateful for.

As well as being a Street Librarian, Sophie is the force behind Bin Chicken Books, an online book shop established to divert unwanted books from landfill.

This is one Street Librarian who recognises that one chook's trash is another chook's treasure!
