Street Libraries are beautiful home for books, planted in your (or your neighbour’s) front yard. They are accessible from the street, and are an invitation to share the joy of reading. Street Libraries are a window into the mind of the neighbourhood; books come and go; no-one needs to check them in or out. People can simply reach in and take what interests them; when they are done, they can retur

n them to the Street Library network, or pass them on to friends. If anyone has a book or two that they think others would enjoy, they can just pop it into any Street Library they happen to be walking past. They are a symbol of trust and hope – a tiny vestibule of literary happiness.

Hello Little Green Library - welcome to the map!

Located in Nathan, QLD, the Little Green Library promises to be an excellent and interesting source of literature - just be sure to give a book when you can, or return what you have borrowed.

“Grab a book and take a stroll through Toohey Forest,” invites Street Librarian Sophia. “Find a bench between the trees for a good read!”

An excellent idea, and another generous Street Librarian to be grateful for.

As well as being a Street Librarian, Sophie is the force behind Bin Chicken Books, an online book shop established to divert unwanted books from landfill.

This is one Street Librarian who recognises that one chook's trash is another chook's treasure!

This lovely gentleman is Ron, a newly-registered member of the Street Library community.

Ron has come to our attention thanks to the love, support and admiration of his family, coupled with his own joie de vivre, for which we should all be grateful.

“I am sending through a photo of my father,” writes Anne in Cambewarra, NSW.

“He recently made a Street Library from repurposed materials in his workshed at home in Manly, QLD. I registered his library for him and he now has it proudly displayed and operational.”

Completely delightful, but here’s the real kicker, delivered by Anne:

“What I love about my father is his lifelong love of community spirit, and his desire to always do his bit to make people happy. Now in his 90th year, I think the things he achieves and his desire for finding purpose are remarkable.”

Just when you thought this tale couldn’t possibly be any sweeter, you’ll be pleased to hear that Ron’s grandson Luke was instrumental in assisting with the sourcing of materials for Ron’s Street Library creation, and that Luke is now also creating a Street Library of his own.

One family, three generations of Street Librarians. Enormous thanks and admiration go out to Ron, Anne and Luke.

A big shout out to the North Queensland Conservation Council, who have established a Street Library in the Townsville suburb of Railway Estate.

A small grassroots organisation, the NQCC works to promote and protect the region's natural environment through community action and political advocacy.

The library’s artwork celebrates some of the area’s marine-life; Dugongs, Crocs, Manta Rays and Sea Turtles are featured on the library, which is now maintained by the NQCC members, all of whom support the need for environmental advocacy.

Say Hello to Taylah’s Library, a simple gesture borne from one person's love of books.

“Books have always been a source of joy, comfort, and discovery in my life,” says Street Librarian Taylah. “Reading opens doors to new ideas, places, and perspectives, and I want to share those experiences with others.”

Like many Street Librarians, Taylah’s love of books has motivated her to establish a Street Library as a way to connect with her community. “By starting a Street Library I’m giving neighbours a place to discover a great story or share their favourite read,” she explains. “We can celebrate the simple pleasure of reading together.”

Nestled amongst the bromeliads in the Brisbane suburb of Tarragindi is the Cracknell Road Estate Street Library.

“No one knew exactly when it first appeared," says its mysterious Street Librarian.

"Some said it was built by a creative soul who believed stories should travel freely, like Brisbane breezes. Others said it had simply grown there, as naturally as the tree above it.”

Some good news from Explorers Early Learning in Wallan, VIC. Since installing their Street Library - The Wondering Place - the children attending the ELC have developed an even greater interest in reading books.

“Listening to stories inspires their imagination,” writes Sandra on behalf of the centre. “They have even learnt some of the skills required to re-tell the stories they have read!”

The Edwards Avenue Exchange in Thornton, NSW, is a delightful example of family DIY. “[Our library] was handmade from an old bookshelf with the design help of my husband, and painting and decorating by my daughter,” says new Street Librarian, Dillen.

“It’s a free community space built on sharing, kindness, and a love of reading,” she continues. “Whether you’re searching for your next great read, passing on a favourite story, or encouraging little readers to explore books, there’s something here for everyone. Three cheers for the legends at Whyalla City Council who have installed not one, but two (!) beautifully decorated Street Libraries at the Point Lowly campsite in coastal South Australia.

“We handed over the undecorated libraries to the Whyalla Art Group so they could work their magic,” says Jenny Barnes of Whyalla City Council.

“The result is stunning. Two bespoke Street Libraries that also serve as miniature artworks, showcasing Whyalla.”

The Art Group have perfectly captured some iconic features the area is known for. “Our unique circular jetty, bright seaside daisies, seagulls wheeling through the air, and our amazing cuttlefish, fish fins and faces,” says Jenny. “These libraries evoke a feeling of joy.”

Beneath the eucalypts and kookaburras of Burpengary East, QLD, you're invited to discover, share, or leave behind a story to love.

Blue Skies Street Library was lovingly created from an old wooden cupboard, repurposed and restored to create a place where stories can be shared.

“As passionate readers, we wanted to create a space that encourages connection, imagination, and the joy of getting lost in a good book,” says Blue Skies’ Street Librarian, Ames.

“We would love for you to stop by, take a book, leave a book, or simply enjoy discovering a new story.” she continues.

“From time to time, you might even find bookmarks, stickers, or other little surprises waiting inside.”

You guys. Street Librarians are the best!
