Street Library Australia

Street Library Australia Street Libraries are beautiful homes for books, planted in your front yard. Invite a neighbour to share the joys of reading today!

Street Libraries are beautiful home for books, planted in your (or your neighbour’s) front yard. They are accessible from the street, and are an invitation to share the joy of reading. Street Libraries are a window into the mind of the neighbourhood; books come and go; no-one needs to check them in or out. People can simply reach in and take what interests them; when they are done, they can retur

n them to the Street Library network, or pass them on to friends. If anyone has a book or two that they think others would enjoy, they can just pop it into any Street Library they happen to be walking past. They are a symbol of trust and hope – a tiny vestibule of literary happiness.

Books and seeds have a lot in common; a small investment, and something amazing has the opportunity to grow.

Take a look at the Channel Drive Street Library in Heathridge, WA, which offers to ‘feed your soul and your tummy’. Grab a book, grab a seed packet… hopefully something special takes root.

🌱😊🤞

Love this devil-may-care attitude to starting a Street Library in Maidstone, VIC. Got a box? Got books? Tree out front… she’ll be right mate!

Quote of the Day: “We see learning as something that extends far beyond our walls. It lives in shared stories, in quiet moments of curiosity, and in the connections we build with one another.” Thanks to Brianna from Journey Early Learning in Tatura, Victoria.

'It was a dark and stormy night.'

Snoopy started his novel the same way every time. He never finished it, and he never gave up on the idea that stories matter.

Fridge perfection… and a beaut reminder that Street Libraries come in all shapes and sizes. Under the Peppercorn Tree Street Library has finally taken up residence in Gawler East, South Australia, after a rather long dreaming period.

Holding onto hope has paid off for new Street Librarian Jessie, who was the delighted to find herself the recipient of this beautiful old Hoover fridge; a donation from a fellow community member.

“We can’t wait to share stories and books with our neighbours,” she says.

“We've started a FB page to keep track of things being dropped off and read,” Jessie continues. “So please send us your book reviews, requests and suggestions!”

Like Jessie, we look forward to seeing this flourish. Welcome to the map!

A big welcome to the Street Library map for The Fifth Street Chapter in Nuriootpa, SA.

This Street Library might be small, but it's brimming with a big love of books thanks to Street Librarian Jess.

"This space was created to encourage people of all ages to pick up a book - even if it's been years since you last turned a page," she says. "Inside you'll find a mix of adult fiction and non-fiction, teen novels and children's books - something for readers of every age and stage."

"Please feel free to take a book any time. If you have one to leave, that's wonderful - but there is no obligation to swap. Stories are meant to be shared and enjoyed, and everyone is welcome."

Like Jess, we hope that The Fifth Street Chapter becomes part of your story too. Visit the Street Library map to find your nearest Street Library.

We like to give a little fist pump of joy every time we see a Street Library installed at an early learning centre. Street Libraries are a simple but powerful visual reminder that books are special and should be enjoyed by all.

So it’s a big Hooray for the families of Learning Blocks Child Care in Quakers Hill and their newly registered Street Library. “Our Library was created with our children and families to create a shared space for gathering, yarning, storytelling, connection and belonging,” they write.

“It reflects that learning happens in community - through conversations, curiosity, and the simple joy of watching the world, alongside one another.”

Learning Blocks is inviting the wider community to chip in. “When we care for our Street Library together as a community, we listen to each other’s voices and foster a calm and welcoming environment.”

Congratulations Learning Blocks, we admire your outreach and positivity as you encourage your community’s love of reading.

Say Hello to the Tiddy Widdy Word Wagon; a community initiative born of a simple desire to provide residents, visitors and 'shackies' of Tiddy Widdy Beach in SA an opportunity to share resources and create a greater sense of community.

This modern-day book wagon is part of a dream set up provided by members of the Tiddy Widdy Beach Progress Association.

"Sun, sand and stories await," they write. "Grab a book from our unique little trolley to enjoy as you unwind in our own little patch of paradise!"

Tiddy Widdy Word Wagon, you are on the map!
