🌿 10 quick sustainability wins for busy teachers 🍎📚

Between lesson planning and marking, who has time for big sustainability projects? The good news — you don't need to! Even small changes in one classroom can build habits students carry for a lifetime. 💚

Here are 10 easy wins to get started:

1. 📄 Create a Scrap Paper Drawer - one-sided paper is perfect for drafts, sketches and quick maths before recycling
2. 🖨️ Print Double-Sided by Default - cut your classroom paper use in half instantly
3. 💻 Go Digital for Notes & Homework - less printing = less paper waste AND less clutter!
4. 💡 Switch Off When Leaving - make it a class habit to turn off lights, projectors and computers at the end of the day
5. ♻️ Create Student Sustainability Roles - recycling monitors, energy checkers… outsourcing to students is always a win-win!
6. 🍌 Start a Classroom Compost Bin - collect food scraps to add to your school's compost or worm farm
7. ✏️ Collect Old Stationery for Recycling - broken pencils, dry textas and old highlighters can be recycled at places like Officeworks!
8. 🥗 Try "No-Waste" Lunch Days - challenge students to go packaging-free with reusable containers and water bottles
9. 📦 Share Resources Between Classrooms - before ordering new supplies, check what a colleague already has
10. 🪴 Add Indoor Plants - connect students with nature while sneaking in lessons on ecology and responsibility

Sustainability doesn't have to be perfect or complicated. Every small step counts! 🌍✨

🌊💙 World Ocean Day 2026 💙🌊

Today, on World Ocean Day, we join people around the globe in celebrating the ocean that connects us all and recognising the vital role it plays in sustaining life on Earth.
Our oceans produce much of the oxygen we breathe, regulate our climate, support incredible biodiversity and provide food and livelihoods for billions of people around the world.

Yet oceans are facing growing challenges from litter, plastic pollution, habitat loss and climate change.

At Keep Australia Beautiful, we know that what happens on land doesn't stay on land. Every piece of litter that enters a stormwater drain, creek or river has the potential to end up in our oceans, impacting marine life and fragile ecosystems.

World Ocean Day is a reminder that protecting our oceans starts with the choices we make every day.
🌊 Reduce litter and plastic waste
♻️ Reuse and recycle where possible
🐢 Protect marine wildlife and habitats
🤝 Join local clean-up and conservation efforts
🌱 Support actions that create a healthier environment for future generations

This year's message reminds us that creating a healthy ocean and a stable climate requires collective action. Every individual, community, school, business and organisation has a role to play.

Together, we can help ensure Australia's oceans remain clean, vibrant and full of life for generations to come.

💙 Because when we protect our oceans, we protect our future.

🖤💚💙 Mabo Day 2026 💙💚🖤

Today, on Mabo Day, we honour the life and legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo and recognise one of the most significant moments in Australia's history.

On 3 June 1992, the High Court of Australia delivered the landmark Mabo decision, overturning the legal fiction of terra nullius and formally recognising that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have lived on, cared for and maintained deep connections to Country for tens of thousands of years.

The decision was the result of years of determination by Eddie Mabo and fellow plaintiffs, who challenged the claim that their traditional lands belonged to the Crown. Their efforts changed Australian law forever and paved the way for the Native Title Act 1993.

At Keep Australia Beautiful, we recognise that caring for Australia's environment begins with understanding and respecting the world's oldest continuing cultures and their enduring connection to Country.

For generations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have managed land, water and biodiversity through knowledge systems that continue to offer valuable lessons in sustainability, stewardship and caring for the places we all share.

Mabo Day is an opportunity to reflect on this history, acknowledge the significance of the Mabo decision, and celebrate the ongoing contributions of First Nations peoples to the protection and care of Country.

As we continue our work to create cleaner, healthier and more sustainable communities, we also recognise the importance of listening to and learning from First Nations knowledge and leadership.

🗣️ We need to talk... about a whole lot of rubbish! Yes, seriously. 🗑️ It's no newsflash that Australia has a waste problem - an epic, messy waste problem. 😬 And we need to talk about what is happening in landfills around the world, and how it is heating up our beautiful planet. 🌏🔥

📖 In our most recent blog article, we dive deep into the overlooked connection between waste and climate change - primarily, how landfill sites contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. 🏭💨 We also explore lifecycle thinking and circular economies. ♻️

🔍 Finally, we dig into why this connection is often ignored, and what we can all do about it! 💪

🌱 While we are only able to scratch the surface of the problem, the direction forward is clear: meaningful change is needed at every level — from individual choices 🙋 to government action 🏛️ and corporate responsibility. 🤝

We hope you enjoy this read, and welcome new topics! 😊 What do you want to learn more about? 💬

💚🌏 Help Keep Australia Beautiful Protect What Matters Most 🌏💚

As we approach the end of the financial year, now is the perfect time to support the work of Keep Australia Beautiful.

Every day, our environment faces growing pressures from litter, pollution and habitat degradation. These challenges affect not only our communities but also the wildlife and marine life that depend on healthy ecosystems to survive.

At Keep Australia Beautiful, we work to drive positive environmental behaviour change through education, community engagement and practical action, helping to protect the places we love for future generations.

Your donation helps support:
🌱 Environmental education programs that inspire lasting behaviour change
🦘 Protection of wildlife and natural habitats
🌊 Efforts to reduce litter and pollution in our waterways, parks and public spaces
🤝 Community initiatives that create cleaner, greener and more sustainable places to live

Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us continue this important work.

🙏 Please consider making a tax-deductible donation before 30 June.

🦜🌿 World Parrot Day - 31 May 🌿🦜

Yesterday we celebrated the incredible beauty, intelligence, and diversity of parrots, from colourful macaws and cockatoos to clever African greys. But World Parrot Day is more than admiration, it’s a reminder that these amazing birds need our protection. 💚

Did you know?
🦜 There are more than 350 species of parrots worldwide
🧠 Some parrots have the cognitive ability of a young child
🌏 Many species are now endangered due to habitat loss and the illegal wildlife trade

Parrots are highly social, sentient wild animals that belong in nature, not confined to cages. Deforestation, pollution, and environmental destruction are threatening the forests and ecosystems they rely on to survive.

At Keep Australia Beautiful, we know that protecting biodiversity means protecting habitats for all creatures great and small. 🌱 By reducing litter, preserving natural spaces, and supporting healthy ecosystems, we can help ensure parrots continue to thrive in the wild for generations to come.

💚 This World Parrot Day, do the right thing for wildlife and help keep Australia beautiful.

Friday feels in Canberra 🌿✨

There’s a calm kind of magic here on Fridays when the city slows down, the light turns warm over Lake Burley Griffin, and everything feels a little more spacious.

It’s the kind of place that doesn’t demand attention and instead just invites you to wander, pause, and take it in. Coffee by the water, a slow walk through the trees, or just watching the sky shift into evening.

And as you move through it… Remember to leave your footprints behind. 🌇
