Canteen Australia

Canteen Australia Life-changing cancer support for young people. (ABN: 77 052 040 516) We get it. Canteen is the game changer. We help young people cope with cancer in their family.

Just when life should be full of possibilities, cancer crashes into a young person’s world and shatters everything. Through Canteen, they learn to explore and deal with their feelings about cancer, connect with other young people in the same boat and if they’ve been diagnosed themselves, we provide specialist, youth-specific treatment teams. By feeling understood and supported, young people devel

op resilience and can rebuild the foundations that crumbled beneath them when cancer turned their life upside down. That’s how Canteen is the difference.

We’ve had a fantastic start to the year across Queensland, with young people getting involved in some incredible experiences!

From tackling the Story Bridge Climb in Brisbane, to zip lining at Mt Tamborine, hitting the Aqua Park and go-karting in Townsville, along with an Over 18s Dinner, art workshops and so much more - it’s been an action-packed few months. 🤩

It’s been wonderful to see participants building confidence, connecting with others, stepping outside their comfort zones, and creating lasting memories.

A huge thank you to everyone who has helped make these events such a success! 💙💚

Josh survived liver cancer as a toddler.

As he shares, the impact of cancer didn’t stop when treatment ended. It carried through childhood - ongoing health challenges, missed experiences, and opportunities that were out of reach.

Canteen became a place where that narrative began to shift.

It was where he first explored meaningful creative work - designing Canteen bandannas - and began building confidence in his creativity.

That support helped shape what came next. Today, Josh works as a full-time creative, building a career doing what he loves.

💚 Canteen exists to give young people impacted by cancer connection, community, and opportunity - so they’re not defined by what they’ve been through, but supported in where they’re going.

Please donate this tax time to help more young people like Josh access those same opportunities: https://bit.ly/give-canteen

Cancer in young Australians is rising - with many facing aggressive cancers that are complex and hard to treat.

While most will survive, too many are left navigating lifelong impacts: disrupted education, fertility concerns, disability, financial stress, ongoing mental health challenges...the list goes on.

Medical doctor and champion athlete Bridie O'Donnell shares why we need to pay greater attention to the long-term impacts of cancer on young people.

As Canteen sees every day, for young people facing cancer, surviving is only part of the story.

June is National Cancer Survivors Month - a time to recognise that survivorship is more than remission, and to acknowledge the ongoing impact cancer has on young lives.

Supporting Canteen helps young people and families access free counselling, connection and education/career support, while helping advocate for better research, treatment, and long-term care for young Australians impacted by cancer.

Please consider making a donation today at give.canteen.org.au 💚💙

What could you give up for one month?
Dan and his mates are taking on Dry July to raise funds for young people impacted by cancer, and they're inviting others to do the same.
For Dan, the cause is personal. He lost his dad to bladder cancer when he was just 10 years old and turned to Canteen for support.
Through counselling, programs and friendships with people who truly understood what he was going through, Dan found hope during one of the hardest times in his life.

This Dry July, challenge yourself to give something up and help more young people access the support, connection and community that can make all the difference. 💚

From family days, ice skating and movie nights, to feeding cows and crafting - our Tassie community has been busy creating some incredible moments together. 💚

Programs like these are only possible thanks to our generous supporters, who help us to create welcoming spaces where young people can connect, have fun, and feel understood.

Thank you for making days like these possible.

“Preparing a speech about how cancer affected my life, and having so many people hear it, was a transformative outlet.”

Through Canteen’s Leadership Program, Josh found a new way to process and share his experience of cancer.

What began as stepping outside his comfort zone grew into something life-changing.

“Ambassadorship showed me that the isolation and turmoil I went through could become something meaningful - an experience that connected me with others facing hardship.”

Canteen helps young people turn lived experience into connection, confidence, and purpose. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation. 😊💙

Pete lost his wife Lauren to cancer in 2025. She was just 24 when diagnosed, and he was 25. During her treatment, Pete stepped away from his career as a new graduate optometrist to become her full time carer. Throughout that time, he was supported by a Canteen counsellor, saying they were "always there for support if you need them."

Since losing Lauren, Pete has been determined to give back. To honour her memory, he created custom hats, with Lauren's twin sister contributing to the design, and set out to raise $2,500 for Canteen.

We wanted to take a moment to share this beautiful tribute to Lauren and thank Pete for turning his loss into something that will help others. 💚

This Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, take a moment to learn the signs, understand the risk factors, and have conversations that could save lives. Early detection matters - 99% of bowel cancer cases can be treated successfully when detected at the earliest stage.

Bowel cancer is the deadliest cancer for Aussies aged 25-54. For many young people, a parent's bowel cancer diagnosis can turn life upside down. Others may be facing their own diagnosis. If cancer is impacting your life, Canteen is here to help. 💚

“For the first time… I didn’t have to explain myself.”

Josh joined Canteen when he was 12, following in the footsteps of his sisters.

“I was introverted and nervous about meeting new people, but it was really good finding friends who shared an experience no one else understood.”

At a movie night, he found himself laughing with a group of boys, quoting internet memes and connecting in a way that felt easy.

For young people impacted by cancer, that feeling can be rare.

At Canteen we create spaces where they don’t have to explain their past because the people around them already understand.

And it only exists because of the generosity of our community.

💚 Please donate this tax time to help more young people like Josh feel less alone: https://bit.ly/give-canteen
