Through Canteen, they learn to explore and deal with their feelings about cancer, connect with other young people in the same boat and if they’ve been diagnosed themselves, we provide specialist, youth-specific treatment teams. By feeling understood and supported, young people develop resilience and can rebuild the foundations that crumbled beneath them when cancer turned their life upside down.

To close out Lymphoma Awareness Month, we're sharing the final part of Tara's story. The hardest part wasn't the chemo. It was after.

"On the last day of chemotherapy, after celebrating, we had party hats, I rang the bell. It was a really good celebration, but I got home and bawled my eyes out. I didn't know where to go."

"You finish chemo and all of the routine of hospital and nurses and being the cancer patient, you don't get that anymore."

After cancer consumed her life for so long, who was she without it? Tara was later diagnosed with anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder from her cancer experience.

"Everyone else was really excited for me. The only people who really understood were the people I met through Canteen."

Canteen’s peer connection and mental health support helped Tara rebuild her sense of identity. Her story shows why support doesn't end when treatment does.

A few favourite moments from Canteen's Youth Leadership Festival. 🤩

Over one special weekend, young people impacted by cancer came together for inspiring keynote speakers, empowering workshops and plenty of time to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. And of course, the neon pizza party was a highlight.

What stood out most was the young people themselves. They showed up with enthusiasm, creativity and purpose, and with a real drive to use their experience of cancer to help others and make a difference.

Thank you to our supporters who helps make moments like these possible. 💚

Youth Leadership Festival 2026 🎉

70 young leaders impacted by cancer touched down in Sydney from all corners of the country for a weekend packed with connection, learning and fun at Canteen's annual Youth Leadership Festival!�
The excitement of everyone reuniting was unmatched - a special chance to catch up with Canteen friends from other states and meet new people. The weekend was packed with meaningful moments, hearing from members of our Executive Team and keynote speakers Bart Walsh and Molly Croft who inspired the group with their resilience and missions.

Leaders also got stuck into a range of workshops, including:
🌟 Navigating Leadership Through Connection, led by Canteen's YARN
🌟 Back Yourself Through Improv, by ITS - Improv Theatre Sydney
🌟 Creating Space to Lead, by Diverse Art Therapy
🌟 Discovering Your Strengths by My Strengths
🌟 Explore. Prototype. Launch., by Canteen's Education and Career Service

There was plenty of fun too, from a formal dinner with live music to a neon pizza party that had everyone on the dance floor. 🍕🕺🏽

The weekend closed with our AGM on Sunday, with all leaders in attendance, because youth leadership is part of our DNA, and young people’s voices genuinely shape decisions at Canteen.

A huge thank you to Uber for helping all our leaders get to the festival. 💚

For Bron, the bandanna is her first memory of Canteen. It wasn't just an accessory, it was the start of real support and real friendships with other young people who understood exactly what she'd been through.
It was the beginning of something positive, born out of something incredibly hard: facing cancer as a child.

Young people who've had cancer often carry the impacts long after treatment ends, including isolation from missing out on the everyday moments of childhood. That's where Canteen steps in, with psychosocial support, genuine connection, and the kind of fun experiences every young person deserves.
