Mission to Seafarers Newcastle

Mission to Seafarers Newcastle The Seafarers that transport our goods often arrive in our ports facing isolation, financial stress & limited access to support. Shipping is human-powered.

MTS provides practical, emotional, & spiritual care, & we need volunteers to welcome & support these essential workers 💙 Seafarers continually sustain every Australian with the goods we need and enjoy. As a worldwide charity, the Mission to Seafarers stands alongside these 1.6 million men and women in 260 ports around the world. MTS Newcastle is one of 27 Australian centres giving those isolated a

t sea a chance to:
- connect with their loved ones and children, often for the first time;
- mentally and spiritually recharge for the next leg of their voyage; and
- access medical, welfare, and chaplaincy services. We actively respond with loving care to the many challenges and dangers faced by seafarers. We work closely with Australian Government agencies and Newcastle port users to improve the treatment of seafarers and shipping practices in Australian waters. Let’s give back.

Over the past two weeks, we’ve been incredibly grateful to receive a wonderful donation of beanies from Kerrie, followed today by a generous gift of blankets from Squares for Comfort .

Each item represents time, care, and kindness, and will go a long way in supporting our seafarers. We truly appreciate everyone who contributes no matter how small it may seem, it all makes a meaningful difference to our Mission.

The Mission to Seafarers Newcastle is excited to welcome Matt to our Ship Visiting Team! Matt will be our regular Monday ship visitor.

One of the most special parts of ship visiting is being invited to share a meal with seafarers. It’s a chance to experience firsthand their incredible warmth and hospitality, hear their stories, and witness the genuine mateship that exists on board. It’s something our team never takes for granted.

Yesterday our volunteers stepped into the fascinating world of Port Waratah Coal Services — and what a day it was!

We got a behind-the-scenes look at how the site operates, from coal trains being unloaded right through to stacking and loading onto vessels. The whole process is automated, and each vessel has its own dedicated coal stockpile ready to go!

It was also interesting to learn about their approach to sustainability. Nothing goes to waste — water is captured and reused across the site to top up holding ponds, maintain gardens, and much more.

Thanks again for having us — it was a really insightful visit!

We would love for you all to help us welcome our new Ship Visiting Chaplain in training, Louie!

Louie will be completing his 140 hours of chaplaincy training through The Salvation Army, and we are thrilled to have him journeying with us here at the Mission.

Today Louie and Paul had the pleasure of embarking on the maiden voyage of the Neo Faliro - a wonderful first ship visit to begin his training.

Seeing Louie embrace his new role and the joy on his face after his very first ship visit was truly something special. We are so excited to have him as part of the Mission family and look forward to the many visits, conversations, and moments of care he will share with Seafarers in the months ahead.

Please join us in welcoming Louie!

During our recent ship visit, the crew’s chef kindly prepared a beautiful lunch for our students. Moments like these remind us how powerful simple acts of generosity can be.

Thank you to the crew for the warm welcome, and to Senior Chaplain Fr Garry Dodd for capturing these special moments on board. Grateful for the connections, conversations, and shared table.
